Considered one of the most important landscape painters of the 19th century, Eugene von Guerard sort to express the awe-inspiring beauty of the Australian tradition.
He was praised by his contemporaries for his faithful renditions of Botany and geology. This work depicting the head of the Mitta Mitta river, near Omeo in Eastern Victoria looks towards Mount Wilson, named after the Explorer William John Wills of the ill-fated Victorian exploring expedition.
This temporary display shows a selection of photographs captured in 2020 for the State Collection, by photographers working with the regional Victorian communities they were connected to.
The photographers are Tiffany Garvie, Fabiana Guerreiro, Aldona Kmieć and James Wiltshire. Over 350 images have been captured during this project, highlighting the importance of the lived experiences of Victorians to the State Collection. A selection of 30 works are on display for public viewing in Victoria Gallery.
This project received a Highly Commended for theAMaGA Victoria Award for large museums/galleries in the 2021 Victorian Museums and Galleries Awards.
