As part of her role, Houston transportation sales specialist SONJA BALLENGER sees lots of people who work for competitors in our industry. And with 19 years of Averitt experience, she’s developed a keen eye for who will make a good Averitt teammate. Sonja has had four People Like You referrals get hired by Averitt, with possibly one more in the near future. One of the first things Sonja looks for in people is that they care about their image. “Everyone doesn’t have the uniforms that we have,” Sonja explains. “So if you come across a driver who takes it upon himself to look neat, you can see he cares. If he cares about his uniform, he’s going to care about his vehicle. And if he cares about his vehicle, he’s going to care about his customers’ products.” People who want to get referred by Sonja must also have a strong work ethic. “I don’t want to put myself out there and have someone show up who’s not performing at the level I know they can,” Sonja says. “I’ve had family members or friends come up to me and say, ‘My kid needs a job.’ I recently went through that, but I thought, ‘This is not going to be a good fit for us.’ I want to help.
