Celimpilo Ndebele, Developing Social Justice in the Education Sector

At just 29, Celimpilo Ndebele has vast experience in the education sector under his belt with a passion to make a difference. Born in Nkandla and having grown up in Vosloorus, Johannesburg, he attended his primary and high school in the East Rand township. In 2013 he enrolled for his Bachelor of Education at UJ. His majors were IsiZulu and History. “At UJ I was properly trained to be a teacher by Dr TS Hlongwane and Dr VT Mabalane and Mr EDM Sibiya in IsiZulu. Those are UJ teachers who shaped my career and told me what I need to do once I have graduated.”, said Ndebele. At UJ he became involved with residence house committees and was the Academic Resident Advisor between 2014 and 2015 at Afslaan

Men’s residence. In 2016 he was the deputy chairperson at the same residence: One of my roles as the deputy chairperson was student placement and room allocation in the residence. I designed the house logo and residence clothing and I was part of the residence culture transformation process at UJ, transitioning between the old Res culture and decolonizing the old names. Lastly, the most significant role he valued was that of UJ community engagement, where they visited schools, taught kids how to read, visited old age homes and orphanages. In 2018 Ndebele was employed by Curro Holdings as an educator

teaching History at Curro Clayville, Olifantsfontein. Six months later he was promoted to be a Manager of the Sport Department: I attended Curro Sport conferences and development programmes which equipped me with skills to manage that department. I managed to integrate Curro sports with Tembisa, Kaalfontein and Clayville communities. A year later, he was promoted to be the Head of Intermediate Phase Grade 4-6 and managed about fifteen educators in his team. They managed to obtain good academic results, and they supported learners with special learning needs by implementing various teaching approaches to achieve inclusive education.
