26 Richard Wemyss FISHER FOLKS FROM FIFE O N THE GIPPSLA N D LAKES
24th Sept 1880 - Written for the East Fife Record FISHER FOLKS FROM FIFE ON THE GIPPSLAND LAKES The Melbourne fish market, until about two years ago was mainly supplied from Geelong.Queenscliff, Frankston, Mordeville , and WesternPort. At all these places could be found men front the various fishing towns of the East of Fife, following the calling of their forefathers, which they hail quietly taken to on the abatement of the gold fever. The false, fascinating glamour of the digger's
life they soon found to be well replaced by the comfort and prosperity coming from a settled industry. The opening of the railway to Sale rendered the transmission of fish from the Gippsland Lakes to the Melbourne market a matter of possibility. These lakes form a vast natural fish preserve, the importance of which is even yet not fully appreciated or understood.
