53 Men

This month, I want to tell you a story, a story so magnificent in its scope and so monumental in its importance that it altered the course of history. A story of a crew of explorers on an expedition to find a land hidden from the world. It’s a tale of 53 men who changed the world forever. A story about the search for a treasure so valuable that people would risk their lives and the lives of their children to obtain it. It’s the search for the cradle of liberty and the birthplace of freedom, the story of America. America’s destiny was in the making for centuries before Columbus or the Pilgrims ever considered it. America was being prepared. The events that established our great nation were foreknown to God and revealed to prophets of old. As in an enacted drama, the players on the scene were rehearsed and selected for their parts. As we look back upon what we call our history, a telling theme recurs repeatedly in this drama. It is that God governs the affairs of this nation. This is a great motive that has run throughout our history. When Columbus, the Pilgrims, the Puritans, and others came to America, they testified to God’s intervention on their behalf. Columbus said, “God gave me the faith and courage afterward.” He said, “Our Lord unlocked my mind, sent me upon the sea, and gave me fire for the deed. Who heard of my enterprise, called it foolish, mocked me, and laughed. But who can doubt but that the Holy Ghost inspired me?“ During the voyage, after weeks of sailing with no land in sight, mutiny rose. Finally, Columbus promised the captains of the two other ships that they would turn back if they did not see land in 48 hours. Then he went to his cabin, got on his knees, and, in his words, “prayed mightily to the Lord.” The next day, Oct. 12, they sighted land. Next, the country needed the help of 53 men. Fifty-three men rose up and assembled to do God’s will. What can I say about the Founding Fathers? These men are why we can sit in our churches and worship as we choose today. The Declaration of Independence affirmed the Founding Fathers’ belief and trust in God in these words: “We hold these truths to be self- evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their

Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Imagine in your mind a cause so great that you would risk all you have, including your life and your children’s lives. For the Founding Fathers, that cause was freedom and liberty from an oppressive government. Support for the Declaration of Independence would demand a terrible sacrifice on the part of its signers. Five of the signers were captured as traitors and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons in the Revolutionary War; another had two sons captured. Nine died from wounds or the hardships of the war. All the Founding Fathers agreed that God’s invisible hand was at work in all they accomplished. When they completed the Declaration, the Founding Fathers considered it a miracle. One said, “When the great work was done and published, I was amazed. Nothing less than the superintending Hand of Providence, that so miraculously carried us through the war … could have brought it about.” John Adams, one of the 53, said: “All that I have, and all that I am, and all that I hope, in this life, I am now ready here to stake upon it; and I leave off as I begun, that live or die, survive or perish, I am for the Declaration. It is my living sentiment, and by the blessing of God it shall be my dying sentiment, Independence, now , and I NDEPENDENCE FOR EVER. ”

Allied Powers Outwitted the Enemy, One Game at a Time WHEN MONOPOLY HELPED WIN A WAR

You know Monopoly as the game that ruins friendships and sparks hourlong battles over Park Place. But during World War II, it played a much more significant and far braver role: helping Allied soldiers escape from German POW camps. Yes, really . In one of the most brilliant covert ops of the war, the British Secret Service turned Monopoly into a top-secret escape kit. Before this tactic, smuggling noisy paper maps without tipping off the guards was too risky, and getting caught could be fatal for prisoners. Enter silk — strong, weather-resistant, and, most importantly, silent. The British turned to John Waddington Ltd., the licensed Monopoly manufacturer in the UK, who also happened to be an expert in printing on silk. It was a match made in espionage heaven. Waddington didn’t just tuck maps into game boxes, though. In a locked room most employees didn’t know existed, craftsmen rigged Monopoly sets with tiny metal files, magnetic compasses, and even real currency hidden beneath the play money. Each game was marked with a secret red

dot on the Free Parking space — an insider’s clue for captured soldiers to look out for.

Thanks to a clever partnership with the Red Cross, these “games” were slipped into POW camps as humanitarian aid packages. The guards thought they were passing along innocent entertainment. Meanwhile, inside the box were the tools to freedom. By the end of the war, over 35,000 POWs had escaped German camps — many with the help of these customized Monopoly sets. Though exact numbers are lost to history, Monopoly’s role in those escapes is one of the war’s clever secrets. The mission was kept quiet for decades to preserve the strategy for future use. Today, the story reminds us that the simplest tools can sometimes carry out extraordinary missions. Next time you pass “Go,” just remember Monopoly once helped people pass barbed wire.

Cheesy Tomato-Basil Stuffed Chicken

INGREDIENTS • 4–6 boneless, skinless chicken breasts • 1/2 cup basil pesto • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese • 1/3 cup oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes, drained, oil reserved • 2–3 tbsp sun-dried tomato oil • 2 cups cherry tomatoes, divided • 2 cloves garlic, smashed

• 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar • Chili flakes, to taste • 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped • 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves • Salt and pepper, to taste

1. Preheat oven to 425 F. 2. Slice chicken down the middle horizontally; (not cutting all the way through). 3. Spread pesto inside filleted chicken, then stuff with cheese and tomatoes before closing chicken, covering filling. 4. Place chicken in a large oven-safe skillet. Drizzle with oil. 5. Set the skillet over medium heat; cook 5 minutes. 6. Add 1 1/2 cups tomatoes, garlic, balsamic vinegar, and season with chili flakes. Cook 2–3 minutes, then remove from heat. 7. Bake in oven for 7–10 minutes until chicken is cooked through and tomatoes burst. 8. Toss remaining 1/2 cup tomatoes with basil, thyme, salt, and pepper. 9. Serve the chicken topped with fresh tomatoes. DIRECTIONS
