ISLANDS The New Guinea Islands are situated in the rough shape of a ring around the Bismarck Sea in the north of Papua New Guinea. They can be divided into four main islands: Manus, New Britain, New Ireland and Bougainville. Literally hundreds of smaller island

and WWII history . New Britain is home to five active volcanoes. The most active of these, Tavurvur , is at the mouth of Simpson Harbour in Rabaul. The smoking, belching caldera is a sight thousands of tourists come to see every year. The quaint township of Kavieng is perched at the northern end of New Ireland,

groups and atolls are dotted across these areas. The island of New Britain is truly a place of wonder. Kimbe Bay is renowned for having one of the most biologically-diverse marine environments in the world.
