A History of Baptists in America Prior to 1845 By limiting his period the author is able to present the essentials of early U.S. Baptist history in one handy volume designed for use as a textbook in colleges and seminaries. Particular attention is given to the contributions of Baptists of the South before the Southern Baptist Convention was formed. There is an attempt to be ob jective with respect to the Northern c o n t r i b u t i o n s , however. M a n y portraits and illustrations and a num ber of appendices make the book addi tionally useful. A bibliography and index further commend it. 205 pages; cloth; American Press, New York; $3.00. STREAMS OF HEALING; A BOOK OF COMFORT compiled by Lester R. Liles. 160 pages; Revell, Westwood, N.J.; $2.50. A devotional collection of prose materials coupled with Scripture passages on many themes and from many sources, but all designed to bring consolation.

This little book is really more sig nificant than its unpretentious size would suggest. It is printed on fine coated paper and contains 117 plates, some of them picturing here objects or i n s c r i p t i o n s for the first time. While written for the layman, the , work is by no means amateurish, as the author is assistant keeper of the Department of Western Asiatic An tiquities of the British Museum. The periods covered extend from the earl iest times through the New Testament era. There is a comparative chart of the development of alphabets. A bib liography, index, and endpaper maps make the book additionally useful. 112 pages; cloth; Wm. B. Eerdmans Pub. Co., Grand Rapids; $3.50. The Gospel in Dispute By Edmund Perry What the author means by this title is that the Christian message is thrown into focus by comparing it with the other missionary religions of the world — Judaism (really not so missionary), Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism. He contends to begin with that in no part of the world does Christianity hold real sovereign in fluence, but is rather only one of several religious faiths contending for the interest and commitment of a largely u n c o mm i t t e d , and to an a s t o n i s h i n g extent non-committal, public. The central fortresses of each of these other religions must be stormed, but in the meantime Chris tians must expect the same storming of their own citadel. If there is to be any true advance towards Christian izing the world it can only come if we purge ourselves of indefensible accretions to the true gospel, and understand fully the basic elements in these other religions so we can detect their weakness and attack them successfully. Some will be disappoint ed in the author’s failure to rely more heavily upon the power of the Spirit in carrying on the advance of God’s work on earth, but all readers will find themselves in need of some re study of their positions in the light of the magnitude of the opposition. 230 pages; cloth; Doubleday & Co., New York; $3.95.
