long ago, so there is an enemy of the soul, strong and terrible. His name is Satan, and God’s Word says that he goes about as a “roaring lion . . . seeking whom he may devour.” How important it is that each gate of our temples be guarded by a strong guard! This great enemy, Satan, is very subtle. He longs to gain an entrance to the temple of the soul. Through the gate called “Hearing,” he often tries to enter by means of a naughty story. Through the gate called “Tast ing,” he has entered many a temple by just one taste of something harm ful. He tries to get possession of the lips of boys and girls, causing them to say unkind and untrue things. He has tried to cause boys and girls to listen just once to something dis pleasing to the Lord. Oh, dear chil dren, do keep the gates to your tem ples well guarded! But, you say, where are we to find a guard stronger than this terrible enemy? God’s Word gives us the se cret. The Lord Jesus Christ has won the victory over this dreadful enemy. Satan is a conquered foe. When the Lord Jesus died on the cross, Satan’s doom was sealed. Let the Lord come into your heart! Receive Him as your Saviour. Then your body will be come His temple. Let Him take full possession now. He will be the strong guard of every gate. You will be safe and secure, trusting and resting in Him, not only throughout this year, but also every year of your life. “what are those lovely lights?” “Those are stars,” said the father. “Those are God’s little lights.” “ But why have I never seen them before?” “Because you are a very little child, and have never been out in the night before.” “Can I see the stars only at night, Father?” “Only at night, my child.” “Do they only come out at night, Father?” “No, they are always there, but we cannot see them when the sun is shining.” “But, Father, the darkness is not terrible here. It is beautiful.” “Yes, dearie, the darkness is always beautiful if you will only look up at the stars instead of into the comers.” “What time I am afraid, I will put my tmst in thee” (Psa. 4:8).

making bridges. A brave guard was placed at each gate. When the castle was finally com plete, the prince took possession of it. He was very happy in his beautiful, new home, and he felt safe and se cure there, too. Of course, there were enemies roundabout who longed to enter the castle and capture the prince, but be cause the gates were guarded, no en trance could be made. All went well with the prince, until one night an enemy stole stealthily about the castle, and found one gate unguarded. Quickly he gave a signal to his followers, and in an other moment, the foes were in the castle. There, in the prince’s own castle, they took him captive. God’s Word says that these won derful bodies of ours are temples, or we may call them castles. When a person accepts the Lord Jesus as Sav iour, his body becomes a temple in which the Lord Jesus dwells. “What! know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?” (1 Cor. 6:19). How wonderful that He should choose to live in these bodies of ours! Our temples, like the prince’s castle, have five gates. There is the Gate of Hear ing, the Gate of Smelling, the Gate of Seeing, the Gate of Feeling, and the Gate of Tasting — five gates through which contact is made with the outside world. As the prince had enemies in the

By Beatrice Spies, Biola '27 A story is told that once upon a time, in a far-away country, there lived a prince who desired to have a castle all his own. He chose a beau tiful site on a hillside. From here he had a wonderful view of all the country roundabout. Workmen were chosen, and soon the work of build ing the castle was in progress. In those days, people often had bit ter enemies, so to insure safety, the prince had a thick wall built all around his castle, and beyond that a deep trench was dug. But since he must have a way to reach the outside world, and his friends must have a way to reach him, five gates were made in the strong wall. These gates could be lowered across the trench, A little child lay in her crib, crying because she was afraid of the dark. Her father in the room be low heard the sobs and came up and said, / “What ails you, my dear, and why do you cry?” The child said, “Oh,,Father, I am afraid of the dark. Nurse says I am too big to have a light, but the cor ners are full of dreadful blackness. Oh, Father, why is it so dark? Why can’t it always be day?” The father took the child in his arms and carried her downstairs and out into the night. “ Look up, dearie,” he said in his kind voice, “ look up and see the lights, God’s little lights.” The little one looked up and saw the stars sparkling in the dark sky; bright as candles they burned, and yellow as gold. “Oh, Father,” cried the child,
