T he writing of this song is said to have been inspired by an important event in the life of a young Baptist preacher, John Faw cett. He was pastor of a small church in the village of Wainsgate, England, in 1772, having occupied that position for seven years. He had a large family ( “my family increases faster than my income,” he wrote). In that year, 1772, he received a call to become pastor of a large church, Carter’s Lane Chapel, in London, at a much larger salary. The call was accepted, the fare well sermon was preached, the household goods were loaded on moving-wagons, and the neighbors had come to bid farewell. Sud denly Mrs. Fawcett broke into tears. “O John, I cannot bear this,” she sobbed; “ I know not how we can go!” “Nor I, either,” her hus band replied; “nor will we go. Un load the wagons!” A letter was dispatched to Lon don, declining the position, and John Fawcett remained the pastor of the small Wainsgate church for 50 years! He also similarly re fused the presidency of the Bap tist Academy at Bristol. The poem was first printed, un der the title “ Brotherly Love,” in a collection which contained 166 of Fawcett’s poems (1782). There are two tunes now used. The earliest one, Boylston, was composed in 1832 by Lowell Ma son. The most-used one is Dennis, which was arranged in 1845 by Lowell Mason from a tune which

he found in Switzerland while touring Europe in 1837—composed by Hans Georg Nageli. Nageli was a noted Swiss musi cian, the président of the Swiss Association for the Cultivation of Music. He edited a music periodi cal, and published most of Bee thoven’s music, Beethoven being one of his closest friends. He was born May 26, 1773, and died De cember 26, 1836. Fawcett’s birthdate was Janu ary 6 , 1740. At the age of 16 he was converted under the preaching of Whitefield and joined the Bap tist church. Several years later he studied for the ministry and be came the pastor of the Wainsgate church at the age of 26. Being a prolific writer, he pub lished several books on practical religion, a devotional commentary on the Scriptures and many hymns. His Essay on Anger pleased King George the Third so greatly that he was offered “any thing he wanted.” One biographer reports that Fawcett answered the King’s offer of “ anything he want ed” with the reply, “ I live among my own people, I enjoy their love, God blesses my labors among them and I need nothing which even a king cotild supply.” His fame as a writer spread far and wide. Brown University (in the United States) conferred upon him a Doctor of Divinity degree in 1811. In spite of his honors and fame, he retained his pastorate in Wainsgate, until a paralytic stroke ended his life July 25, 1817.
