Heritage status for old land office

Planning Director Dominique Tremblay noted that this is the final priority step in the official heritage designation process for a building. “There are a lot of steps before we get to the final designation,” Tremblay said, noting that the process is a 10-step procedure. Once the bylaw is passed, all that is left is to place a public notice about the official he- ritage building designation and also register
it with the provincial heritage buildings lists. The process to have the old land registry office declared a heritage building began in 2013 and, Tremblay noted, there were seve- ral appeal periods that had to be observed
during the process. Mayor Pierre Leroux observed that official heritage designation takes time and cannot be rushed. “This was an ongoing process,” he said. “Council wasn’t sitting on its hands.”
The process took longer thanmost people realized it would, but, in the end, Russell Township has another heritage building for its official list of community historical assets.
