AUGUST 2025

A NOTE FROM SYLVIA

As we close out our fiscal year, I want to take a moment to reflect on the resilience and commitment that power Twin Cities PBS. In a year marked by deep uncertainty and serious threats to federal funding for public media, we are reminded that TPT’s greatest strength is you—our members, donors and viewers. Your steadfast support continues to inspire us every day and enables us to serve our community with trusted programming and essential services for every age and life stage. This month, I’m excited to share a few highlights that reflect the heart of what public media does best: inform, enrich and connect. On August 11, we’re proud to present a special preview of Ken Burns’ “The American Revolution.” Eight years in the making, this sweeping six-part, 12-hour documentary series explores how the early formation of the United States sparked a global wave of democratic change. Premiering nationally in November, this preview offers TPT viewers an early look at a story as relevant today as it was 250 years ago. Later in the month, our beloved Sunday night mysteries return on August 24, with new seasons of “Professor T,” “The Marlow Murder Club” and the fan-favorite “Unforgotten.” These dramas continue to delight and surprise, drawing us into stories of intrigue that light up summer evenings with a dash of wonder and surprise. As we look ahead, we know that TPT’s ability to endure and thrive depends on our community, and the moment is now to protect the future of public media. If you’re in a position to deepen your support, we invite you to do so at TPT.org/GiveNow. Every contribution helps ensure that TPT remains a trusted, independent, freely accessible source of public affairs coverage, storytelling and lifelong learning—for everyone.

(L-R) HOPE IN THE STRUGGLE, THE ELECTRIC INDIAN

2024 IN REVIEW: STORYTELLING THAT INSPIRES HISTORY, CULTURE, AND NATIONAL PROGRAMMING FROM THE TWIN CITIES PBS 2024 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY

At TPT, we leverage engaging storytelling to make an impact on our shared communities. Stories have the ability to educate, spark empathy, inspire action and drive real change. This past year, TPT brought powerful stories to life across Minnesota and beyond – tackling urgent social issues, spotlighting pivotal moments in history, igniting conversations in our communities, celebrating creativity and culture, and reaching new audiences across multiple platforms.

MINNESOTA EXPERIENCE At the start of 2024, TPT released four new “Minnesota Experience” films that center on some of the trailblazers who have shaped Minnesota in more recent history. Jesse Venture Shocks the World! To coincide with the 25th anniversary of Jesse Ventura’s inauguration as the Governor of Minnesota, we premiered “Jesse Ventura Shocks the World!” in January, a film that looks back at the origins, evolution and surprising impact of one of the most famous, infamous, unpredictable and enigmatic governors in American history.

Hope in the Struggle: The Josie Johnson Story Timed with Black History Month in February, we premiered “Hope in the Struggle,” featuring the life and work of Freedom Fighter, activist and educator Dr. Josie Johnson. Known as Minnesota’s “First Lady of Civil Rights,” Dr. Johnson fought for fair housing, education and civil rights, and she shares how her experiences turned her to activism and how the next generation is taking up the mantle. The struggle for justice and equality continues, but there is hope in the struggle. Regional Award Winner 2024 Upper Midwest Emmy® Award Winner in the “Historical/Cultural/Nostalgia – Long Form Content” category

The Electric Indian In March, TPT released “The Electric Indian,” a tribute to Ojibwe hockey legend Henry Boucha. A stand-out hockey star from Warroad, Minnesota, Boucha impressed on the ice from the 1969 Minnesota High School Hockey Tournament to the 1972 Olympics to the NHL, but an on-ice assault and injury ended his athletic career and unexpectedly led to a journey of healing and cultural reclamation. “The Electric Indian” reached audiences nationally “The Electric Indian” aired nationally 241 times on 107 channels in 49 markets . Also the film was honored with four festival film awards and/or nominations. Profe In Minnesota, the Latine community burgeons amidst a vast opportunity gap. Two charter schools, rooted in decades of struggle, champion equity through decolonized, bilingual education. Premiering in April, “Profe” delves into this educational revolution, blending history and contemporary narratives to illuminate its profound impact.

NATIONAL PRODUCTIONS America Outdoors

TPT’s second season of “America Outdoors with Baratunde Thurston” premiered in September 2023 on PBS stations across the nation. A best-selling writer, podcaster and comedian, Thurston travels the country to uncover our complex relationship with the outdoors. From biologists saving snapping turtles to BIPOC mountain bikers, he meets a fascinating cast of characters with one thing in common: a passion for being outside. Key Highlight Season 2 of “America Outdoors” was nominated for a Webby People’s Choice Award and for the Television Critics Award in the “Outstanding Achievement in News and Information” category. Sound Field Season five of “Sound Field,” TPT’s digital music education series in partnership with PBS Digital Studios, premiered in the spring of 2024 and includes work produced by fellows from the PBS Accelerator Fellowship for Diverse Voices and the PBS Ignite Mentorship for Diverse Voices. Hosted by accomplished musician Linda Diaz and series producer Jojo Lorenzo, season 5 explores the influence of Black artists on country music, Hmong cultural preservation through music, and the evolution of Sierreño music.

Key Highlight In April 2024, “Profe” also premiered at the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival.

The Benefits of Gentler Hobbies By Natalie Schriefer

The research highlights a few beneficial hobbies — all "gentler" activities like gardening, crafts and social clubs. This is unlike most "healthy hobbies" lists, which often focus on intense physical activity like tennis or ballroom dance. This focus on intensity might be lessening: Multiple studies have recently looked into the benefits of gentler hobbies. A second 2023 Harvard study linked five less intense hobbies with successful aging: gardening, reading, watching TV or listening to the radio, participating in social activities and playing cards or other games. Out of more than 7,000 older adults, those with these five hobbies tended to be more physically active, have better mental health and have higher cognitive function, compared to those with few or none of these hobbies. A 2020 Japanese study linked certain hobbies to decreased dementia risk. Over six years, they surveyed more than 50,000 adults over age 65 and found that travel and playing ground golf (a Japanese game that's a cross between golf and mini golf) lowered dementia risk for men and women. The researchers also noted that "the risk of dementia was lower as the number of hobbies increased." Finally, a 2023 Australian study found that engagement with the arts benefited older adults' mental health. This could include anything from creating art oneself to experiencing others' art at an event like a concert or an exhibition. One of the researchers recommended that adults who want to engage with the arts "take part in the art form that makes them feel good."

Google anything related to health and well- being and your search will turn up generic recommendations. These will range from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's MyPlate dietary resources to the CDC's suggested 150 minutes of weekly activity. You may also find academic studies, like Harvard's recent news brief discussing the importance of hobbies for older adults. Harvard's brief details a 2023 study. Examining nearly 100,000 adults over age 65, the researchers found that participants who engaged in hobbies had higher life satisfaction than those who did not.

What Teaching Others Has Taught Me By Aimee Stern

Older Americans who are not yet ready to retire, or looking for a retirement job, are a resource that can help their communities with education.

The demand for substitute teachers is higher than ever. More than half a million people worked as substitute teachers in 2023, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The average hourly pay for a substitute teacher nationally is about $21 per hour. My middle school tutoring student is working on a 60-second monologue from the point of view of the Cyclops after Ulysses blinds him in the "Odyssey." I put him "on stage" in his family's kitchen. He holds his only eye with both hands and shrieks "You've blinded me." He is in a magnet program and is very bright but has attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder which makes it hard for him to concentrate. I'm learning that acting things out and more physicality can help him focus. Tutoring is a wonderful option if you want to work one-on-one with students and help them master subjects they are struggling in. Start finding tutoring clients by letting people in the schools you've worked in know that it's a service provided. There are classes in high school that teach business skills like accounting, marketing and professional writing, which can be a great option for tutoring. Explore neighborhood listservs and personal contacts to see who might need support.

Bored in retirement? Concerned that your funds will run out before you do? Want to spend time with kids and adults and do good in the process? I teach people ranging from small children to adults and spend my days and some nights in their worlds. Exhausted, happy and fulfilled is the best description of how I am. My life has meaning in these turbulent times, and I'm doing something that matters and makes my and other lives better. To say there is a teacher shortage in the United States is an understatement. According to Statista, a data research and analysis service, 54,000 teachers quit their jobs in the U.S. during 2024. Older Americans who are not yet ready to retire, or looking for a retirement job, are a resource that can help their communities with education.
