ONE TRAFFIC STOP, MANY CHARGES

Five people arrested and almost two dozen charges resulted from a spee- ding incident on Highway 417 near Hawkesbury. An OPP highway patrol March 30 dealt with an early-morning speeding situation at about 2:30 a.m. that resulted in a chase along Highway 417. Police had to set up a spike belt ahead of the fleeing vehicle to force it to stop. The driver and four other people inside the car were arrested. During a search of the vehicle police found and seized two bulletproof vests, a number of burglary tools, several master key fobs, and cellphones. Police filed a total of 21 charges after placing the five people, all from the Montréal area, under arrest. Aymane Amajout, 21, is charged with pos- session of burglary tools and possession of an automobile master key. Samuel Virguez, 18, is charged with possession of burglary tools, possession of an automobile master key, and with failure to comply with a judicial release order and with a probation order. Mohamed Yanis Zemiti, 18, is charged with possession of burglary tools, posses- sion of an automobile master key, dangerous driving, and attempting to flee from police. of an automobile master key, and four counts of breach of probation. Amajout, Virguez, and Zemiti were re- leased from custody and ordered to attend
provincial court in L’Orignal May 10. Khlass and the unnamed youth were held in custody for a scheduled bail hearing.

A crowd of several dozen braved the cold wind Sunday morning in Hawkesbury over the April 1 weekend to mark Autism Awareness Day with the official raising of a commemorative flag at the town municipal office to help highlight public knowledge of the disease, the research programs into its cause, and the support services for individuals with the condition and their families. Following the flag raising there was a morning swim party for all present at the Robert Hartley Sports Complex along with children’s games. —photo Gregg Chamberlain
