uch has happened in this story since God called Abraham and promised to make from him a great nation, a nation that was to be a blessing to the world. By the grace of God, there were moments of greatness in Israel’s history. Israel had a few strong and faithful leaders, like Moses, Joshua, and Deborah. They even had a few good kings, but more often than not, their kings willfully and routinely led the people to rebel against their Creator. In their stories, we have learned much about the sinful nature that all people are born with and the consequences that come from choosing one’s own will over God’s will. We have also observed a God who is holy and just, but also merciful and ready to forgive — one who calls His people to turn from their sinful nature and to trust Him for their own good and for His glory. This was the message of the prophets. Though their lives were often difficult, they remained faithful to God throughout their lives and left a legacy that inspires believers still today.
