DR. RICHARD DOWNIE

ear Friends, Am hoping you and your families are enjoying a great summer! This Newsletter is the first published since I became President of the World Affairs Council of Orange County (WACOC). So, please let me tell you all how honored and thrilled I am to lead this highly respected organization, which does so much to serve our community. The WACOC’s important mission is to foster thoughtful dialogue that helps members and others better understand the critical global issues that impact our county, our country and the world. To help in accomplishing that mission, the Council is extremely fortunate to have such a dedicated and talented Executive Board, led by Chair Jeff Hobert, and loyal, supportive Trustees and members. We have some very interesting upcoming events I think you will enjoy. Please register now for our programs in September, which include the Annual General Meeting on September 13th at the Westin Hotel in Irvine. This event features Dr. Jerrold Green, President and CEO of the Pacific Council on International Policy, who will address “Confronting Serious Challenges to US National Security.”

Next, the Annual Trustee Luncheon will be held at the Balboa Bay Club on September 25th, at which we will commission the new Class of Trustees and Executive Board for 2023. Additionally, we welcome your participation in our upcoming strategic planning effort to set the future direction of the WACOC. As the new President, I am charged to coordinate a strategic plan that refines our vision and sets objectives regarding the growth of our organization and membership, community outreach and partnerships. Your ideas and input are critical—as the strategy we develop must reflect a consensus on the goals our membership seeks for this Council. Finally, we need your help! The Executive Board has determined that to sustain our financial independence and stability, the Council must shift to the fundraising model typical of non-profit organizations. For that reason, we greatly need—and would sincerely appreciate your generous contributions during our first-ever Annual Fall Giving Campaign starting in September.

Many thanks for all you do to support the WACOC! Please let me know what is on your mind concerning how our Council can be more responsive to your needs—and those of the community.

Very best wishes to all,

Dr.

RichardDownie Richard Downie, Ph.D. President, World Affairs Council of Orange County

Academic World Quest

Academic WorldQuest (AWQ) is a flagship program of the World Affairs Council of Orange County, in conjunction with the World Affairs Councils of America. AWQ engages more than 4,000 high school students annually across the U.S. to test their knowledge of global issues. We are very proud of the winning team from EL DORADO HIGH SCHOOL in Placentia. The team members had a wonderful opportunity to explore Washington, D.C., where they competed in the national finals. Thank you to everyone who made this experience possible!

JAYNE HERRING Member Spotlight

ayne Herring comes to the World Affairs Council of Orange County after years as an active member in the Dallas / Fort Worth chapter. J

A mother of two young daughters, she decided to go back to school later in life to pursue international studies and human rights, focusing on Asia, at Southern Methodist University. While working towards her degree, she interned at the World Affairs Council of DFW and the International Rescue Committee and served on multiple boards and committees of nonprofit and arts organizations. She currently lives in Laguna Beach. Originally from Pennsylvania, she first experienced international travel as a full scholarship participant with Youth for Understanding in Greece at age 16, and vowed immediately to be a global citizen. She moved to New York City after her original collegiate studies and started her career in hospitality (and unfortunately experienced 9/11 first-hand), leading her to be an event planner for major firms and organizations ranging from Lehman Brothers to the Broadway community, before becoming the Executive Liaison to the Board of Trustees of the International Council of Shopping Centers. There, she planned events in over eight countries, meeting with dignitaries such as F. W. DeKlerk and Brian Mulroney. She has traveled to 36 countries thus far for business, study, and pleasure. Also a member of the UNA-OC, today Jayne is committed to continued learning, and being active for her community and our children. In addition to her passion for foreign policy, she is currently learning about local politics, serving in the role of Organizing Director for a candidate for California State Assembly. Always passionate about the value of the arts for human rights issues, Jayne continues to find ways to connect stakeholders in all sectors to accelerate change. She is excited to bring her passions to the World Affairs Council of Orange County.
