Sustainable Ink (Cont’d from Page 1) material cycle and to pose no risk to human health and the environment. Formulating a sustainable print- ing ink is a key component to that principle. The certified ink series, in the spirit of the Open In- novation approach, is not patented so that it can be used by other companies. Torsten Haas, Packaging Developer at Werner & Mertz, stated that sustainable and healthy raw materi- als are just as important as packaging’s recyclability af- ter its use phase. That’s why, in addition to the bottles and caps made of recyclates, sustainable printing inks are critical for a product’s recyclability. New Green Deal The new solvent-based flexo printing ink, called NC 270, is scientifically confirmed for biological cycles by the Material Health Certification. In accordance with the MHC, Gold certification is awarded exclusively to products that do not contain carcinogens, mutagens or reproductive toxicants with plausible exposure routes. “The New Green Deal of the EU Commission calls for safe and reliable plastic packaging that is sustainable for coming generations and the environment,” said Al- bin Kälin, CEO of EPEA Switzerland, an accredited as- sessment body for Cradle-to-Cradle Certified and MHC Standard.“This project is the guide to that goal. It has been confirmed by an independent third-party with the only certification system for cycles.” In 2017Werner & Mertz, Siegwerk and EPEA Switzer- land developed a sustainable UV ink for offset printing as many pigments used in the standard process did not comply with the Cradle to Cradle Certified require- ments for certification. Working Toward The Future With the ink series NC 270 for flexographic printing, theWerner & Mertz Recyclate Initiative has developed its second important printing process for packaging. The flexographic printing ink system can be used to print polyolefin plastic sheeting such as polethylene and polyproplylene. It is also reportedly well suited to the stability and resistance properties required for the stand-up pouch. In other nrews, Siegwerk has developed a series of UV offset inks and UV flexo varnishes with deinking properties to improve the recyclability of UV-coated paper and board packaging “Our new UV flexo varnishes are recyclable by the standard flotation deinking process also used for the recycling of printed ink films on paper and virgin fiber board without any adaption,”explainedThomas Glaser, Head of Technology Sheet-Fed at Siegwerk.
