The Secret to Invisalign Success
DON’T MAKE THESE COMMON MISTAKES
When you first start wearing Invisalign, there are several behaviors you must learn to avoid. You may have gone the Invisalign route because you wanted something that was more low-maintenance and worked faster than traditional braces, but that doesn’t mean you can carry on as if you’re not wearing any orthodontic appliance. Below, you’ll find three of the most common mistakes we see with our patients wearing Invisalign and how to avoid making them.
FIDGETING WITH YOUR INVISALIGN Like most things in life, there will be an adjustment when you first start wearing your aligners. It will feel like there is something foreign in your mouth, and your tongue will want to investigate. Depending on how much pressure you apply and where your tongue is fidgeting, you could injure or scratch up your tongue. Also, avoid clicking the aligners in and out of
position. It doesn’t take long to get used to your new aligners. After a few days, you won’t even notice they’re there, so be cautious during those first few days to ensure you’re not fidgeting with your aligners too much.
DRINKING FLUIDS OTHER THAN WATER It can be easy to reach for a soda while working or grab a sports drink after a workout, but you must be careful about drinking these items while wearing your aligners. Carbonated water and sugar can harm the materials in your Invisalign, causing them to degrade, deteriorate, and possibly even become discolored. It’s easy to remember to take out your Invisalign before a meal, but make sure you take them out before drinking anything other than water.
ATTEMPTING TO SPEED UP TREATMENT We understand that you want your teeth
to be straighter as soon as possible, but the process does take time. Do not skip ahead on your trays, thinking this will speed up your treatment. This can be horribly damaging to your smile. By jumping ahead and using future trays, your teeth could
become loose, destabilized, and might even fall out.
