DOG DAYS OF SUMMER HAVE ARRIVED! Celebrating Our 4-Legged Friends
It’s 95, 96, 97 degrees F ... the dog days of summer are upon us and it’s hot out there! Doing anything outdoors requires proper clothing, sunglasses, sunscreen, hats, and hydration. Just hearing the words “dog days” conjures up images of my three dogs panting in the hot summer sun, but the origin of the phrase actually comes from astronomy. In the sky, the brightest and most vibrant star in the Canis Major (which means big dog in Latin) constellation is known as Sirius, also known as the dog star. This time of year, Sirius rises alongside the sun in the Northern Hemisphere, and both Romans and Greeks believed that because these two mega stars were so close during this time, they created an abundance of heat, making the weather almost unbearably hot this time of year!
There is so much truth behind the phrase, “a dog is a man’s best friend”! In happiness, dogs are there to relish in the joy along with us and to give us plenty of laughs, kisses, cuddles, and hugs. In sadness, dogs are there to comfort us — it’s as if they can sense our feelings and know just how to step in to cheer us up and brighten our day. In times of relaxation, they can all be found right there beside us, chilling too.
While we know this isn’t necessarily true, it’s still fun to call this hot and humid time of year the dog days of summer, and it still will
always remind me of my pups at home. I have a labradoodle, a goldendoodle, and a cavachon — and if you’ve never heard of a cavachon, it’s an adorable mix of a Cavalier King Charles spaniel and a bichon frise! Dr. Gengel and Dr. Yong are also dog lovers and have pups of their own! Each of my three dogs has a distinct personality! Each has a favorite food, favorite treat, and favorite toy, and each reacts differently to different situations, but they all have so much
When we leave the house and return home, whether it’s 10 minutes or five hours later, dogs are so excited to greet us at the door. They love having company over and are always down for a game of fetch or tug-of-war. Can anyone love us more than our dogs? They are wonderful companions and provide unconditional love no matter what! I As we ride out these dog days of summer, take the time to love a little extra on your pups — they deserve it! love to give. Their happiness is absolutely contagious, and every stage, from puppyhood all the way through to the adult years, is fun. No matter what you’re doing, my three dogs are fantastic company.

EAT AWAY THE UV RAYS 3 FOODS THAT BOOST SKIN PROTECTION FROM THE SUN
By now, most of us know how to protect our skin from the sun’s harmful rays. We apply sunscreen, wear hats and sunglasses, and opt for shaded spots to enjoy a picnic or a break. But what if we told you there was a way to do more, and it involved some really tasty food? THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT IT’S TRUE! Many studies have found that antioxidants are the key to protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. While simply changing your diet won’t eliminate the need for sunscreen, you can boost the effectiveness of your sun protection habits by making a few simple swaps. Note: These benefits have only been found in the consumption of the actual food, not the consumption of the food’s nutrients in supplement form. Discuss your supplement options with a trusted medical professional before taking them. COLORFUL FRUITS AND VEGGIES The colors that make fruits and vegetables look so lively are the very compounds our skin loves. Foods like tomatoes, sweet potatoes, pomegranates, kiwis, and oranges all contain carotenoids, which can have sun protection abilities. Likewise, grapes and berries have their own compounds that do
something similar. To add these to your diet, include fruit with every meal, swap potatoes for sweet potatoes for the summer, or snack on some fresh tomatoes! FATTY FISH You have heard that omega-3s are great for your heart, but your skin loves this compound, too. Omega-3s can limit the impact of a sunburn, which can lessen the damage sunburns do to your skin. This is due to the natural anti-inflammatory properties in omega-3s. The best source of this nutrient is in fish, like salmon, herring, or trout. Try searing these delicacies on the grill for your next barbecue. FLAVORFUL DRINKS Your morning routine just got better. Studies have found that coffee and green tea can have tremendous health benefits for your skin. One study found that drinking coffee may lower your risk of developing melanoma (a common form of skin cancer), while green tea contains polyphenols, which, much like the compounds found in fruit, can offer skin protection. Pour yourself a mug each day to reap a few benefits for your skin.
As always, consult with a trusted medical professional if you have further questions or have concerns about your skin’s health.
National Tooth Fairy Day
EXPLORING THE ORIGINS OF SEEMINGLY STRANGE CUSTOM
Lose a tooth, pop it under the pillow, and get paid! Legend has it that when children lose their baby teeth, which starts happening around the age of 6, the tooth fairy makes a surprise appearance, takes the tooth, and replaces it with coins or cash (and sometimes treats and toys) — not a bad deal! While it isn’t quite clear what the tooth fairy does with all of these teeth she collects, we are able to trace the legend of the tooth fairy, after all, and celebrate National Tooth Fairy Day on Aug. 22.
taken very seriously. When a child would lose a tooth, they would bury it, swallow it, or burn it! Sometimes, they were even fed to rodents like mice and rats, which were valued for their strong teeth!
In Scandinavia, the Vikings paid children each time they

lost a tooth and wore them around their neck on a necklace, believing they brought good luck during battles! From here, the practice of exchanging teeth for currency caught on like wildfire all over Europe. The tooth fairy as we know her today originated around the 1900s, but as you can see, long before this, teeth have been valued in many cultures. They had it right since the beginning — teeth are very important, so make sure you take good care of them! The tooth fairy may even leave more for pristine teeth!
In 18th-century France, a bedtime story known as “La Bonne Petite Souris” tells the tale of a fairy that transforms into a mouse to defeat an evil king for a good queen. The mouse hides under the king’s pillow one night and, while he’s sleeping, knocks out his teeth.
In Europe during the Middle Ages, because it was believed that a witch could use teeth to curse someone, disposing of baby teeth was

We all hopefully begin and end our day by brushing our teeth, and many of us have a great habit of brushing after meals and sugary foods, too! By now, it’s likely a routine and mindless act of wetting your toothbrush, squeezing out some toothpaste onto the bristles, and brushing away — it’s second nature! But when the tube of toothpaste runs out, have you ever found yourself standing in the dental aisle at the store, sifting through different types and brands of toothpaste, wondering what some of the ingredients are, what their purpose is, and which ingredients are most important to be on the lookout for? Toothpaste is very important to clean our teeth and fight off plaque, which, if left on our teeth can lead to tartar. It promotes healthy gums, too. Here are some of the most common and important ingredients in most toothpastes! 3 Ways to Foster a Positive Attitude
In today’s society, we are faced with tragic stories and upsetting information, no matter where we turn. This can quickly lead us to a negative mindset where we believe things can’t be fixed and will only get worse, so it’s even more important now to establish a positive mindset. Though it might be easier to bury your head in the sand, fostering positivity in your life will provide you with many benefits.

FOCUS ON THE SILVER LINING. When something bad or unfortunate happens, we are quick to think about the negatives and how they will impact us in the future. Instead, we should be searching for a silver lining. You can find a positive in any situation, but you’ll have to put in the effort to flip your perspective. KEEP A GRATITUDE JOURNAL. When we think about gratitude and thankfulness, our minds usually think about Thanksgiving. But we don’t need to wait for a special day to show gratitude.
