IVY LEAGUE FALL SPORTS CANCELLED DUE TO COVID-19

The Canadian federal government has extended the mandatory quarantine order for most peo- ple entering Canada until August 31st in efforts to control the spread of the coronavirus. Travellers entering the country will have to isolate for 14 days, regardless or not if they are showing any symptoms of COVID-19. The updated order under the Quarantine Act also clarifies that travellers must wear non-medi - cal masks while they are entering the country or are in transit to the place where they will isolate, unless they are travelling in private vehicles. As before, the order does not apply to those who cross the border regularly to ensure goods and services continue to flow, or anyone enter - ing to provide essential services. On July 12th, Barbados started welcoming trav- elers again to the island and muchly needed economic boost as Tourism directly accounts for 12% of Barbados’ gross domestic product, and indirectly for 40% of its economic activity, and is the largest source of jobs in the island’s private sector. CANADA’S MANDATORY QUARANTINE ORDER CONTINUES Barbados Prime Minister, Mia Mottley has said her government is considering letting visitors stay and work remotely from the island for up to a year. Mottley also said island lawmakers are looking at introducing the 12-month “Barbados Welcome Stamp,” noting that restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic had made short-term travel more difficult because of the testing now required. The race is officially on to lead the World Trade Organization out of the worst crisis of its 25-year existence as current chief, Roberto Azevedo, prepares to step down on August 31st. In the coming months delegates from the WTO’s 164 members will select from a roster of eight candidates to become the seventh director-gen- eral of the Geneva-based trade body. These are the eight candidates for the soon to be vacant top position: Mohammad Maziad Al-Tu - waijri, Liam Fox, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Abdel-Ha - mid Mamdouh, Amina Chawahir Mohamed Jibril, Jesus Seade Kuri, Tudor Ulianovschi and Yoo Myung-hee. The members of Ivy League: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, University of Pennsylvania, Columbia, Brown, Cornell and Dartmouth, have officially cancelled all fall athletic programs due to the continuing spread of Covid-19. The Ivy League will re-evaluate when sports pro- grams can resume early in the new year which could include a decision on starting a new foot- ball schedule in the spring of 2021. The move to cancel fall sports could pressure powerhouse conferences to reconsider their upcoming sea- sons, especially with football scheduled to start late next month. The Ivy League became the first college confer - ence to cancel its men’s and women’s basketball tournament on March 10th, due to the pandemic which saw the NCAA follow suit and cancelled its 2020 tournaments on March 12th.
