SHAPING ALASKA’S FUTURE: BEKI TOUSSAINT
Beki first joined ARE in 2012 and has spent her time educating students and teachers across Alaska about the state’s natural resources. In addition to bringing students to AMA's annual convention, Beki has developed new curriculum and found countless ways to help the next generation learn about the importance of Alaska’s resources.
Tell us about your background and what brought you to ARE and to education. When my hopes of becoming a dolphin vet were squashed, I reevaluated and decided to pursue education. After teaching high school science for a bit, I decided I needed to “be a scientist” before being able to be a good teacher, so I moved to Alaska from Colorado and took an environmental science position with Jacobs Engineering, and completed a master’s in environmental science with a focus on octopus genetics. While attending an RDC conference, I saw the ARE booth and realized it was the perfect blend of my background in natural science and edu- cation. Working at the intersection of education,
