Company Description in the ‘List of Winners’ preceeding the section, for checking: Harrison Spinks A fifth-generation family-owned bed maker and pioneer in spring technology Harrison Spinks HARRISON SPINKS is one of Great Britain’s most established and innovative bed

makers. Established in 1840, the company manufactures luxury mattresses under the brands Harrison, Somnus, Hybed and Spink & Edgar. The fth-generation family run business is one of the most vertically integrated bed manufacturers in the world – drawing its own wire for its unique spring technology and growing natural llings on its own farm in Yorkshire. Harrison Spinks received two prestigious Queen’s Awards for Enterprise in 2018, bringing the total number won by the company to four. When it comes to innovative pocket spring technology, Harrison Spinks is regarded as an industry pioneer, having invented ultra-low height pocket spring sheets and machines in 2005. In the bedding industry, technology has not altered

for many decades. However, Harrison Spinks has

revolutionised pocket spring engineering through innovation. Mattress comfort is improved as spring concentration increases; however, technical issues across the bed manufacturing sector have meant that spring density is limited by the gauge of wire

used. Harrison Spinks has solved a whole series of technical problems to reduce the diameter of wire used by 30 per cent and increase the concentration of springs in its products, oering greater comfort and support. Working in partnership with British Steel, a unique grade of steel has been developed, along with a rened drawing process to create the required ne wire. Creating pocket springs in this way means that the company has been able to decrease the weight of the nished product, reduce steel waste, and signicantly increase the number of coils in its products. To facilitate the manufacture of mattresses with unrivalled spring counts, Harrison Spinks has also developed unique, patented spring-making machines that work at ve times the speed of traditional machinery. The more springs in a mattress, the greater the benet to the end user, oering reduced pressure points and more comfort. High spring counts also allow the company to achieve its vision to use 100% natural upholstery llings (historically linked to settlement issues

in mattresses), but springs enable products to maintain height, support and longevity over the lifetime of the mattress. Harrison Spinks’ latest developments in ultra- low height pocket spring units are unique and no other manufacturer previously has made mattress pads with such ne wire and such high coil counts. The lightweight, high-density springs have delivered market advantages and opened new markets for the company, including car seats, running shoes and oce chairs. Simon Spinks, managing director of Harrison Spinks, said: “To be granted two more Queen’s Awards for Enterprise is a huge honour and reects the hard work and dedication of the whole Harrison Spinks team. “Since the company was established in 1840, we have always strived to innovate and go about our

business in a slightly dierent way, for example through creating new ways to manufacture springs and cultivating our farm so we can grow our own natural llings. “We’re delighted to have been recognised by the most prestigious enterprise awards in the UK.” The company, which employs over 600 people in Yorkshire, received Queen’s Awards for Innovation and Sustainable Development in 2013 and awards for both International Trade and Innovation in 2018. The company believes it is the only bed-maker to receive two Queen’s Awards for Enterprise on two occasions.
