Dulwich College Junior School and James Allen’s Junior School Symposium Connections & Communication

Welcome to our Junior School Academic Enrichment Symposium, which is now in its eighth year! The Symposium represents a fantastic way to explore a theme in great detail and challenge our young learners in new and exciting ways. This year, our theme is Connections and Communication. Through workshops, speakers, activities and many thought-provoking questions, we will debate, analyse, and explore our theme. We are very pleased to be collaborating with James Allen’s Girls’ Junior School and Dulwich Wood Primary School over the course of the day. Through the programme, you will see many varied areas of the curriculum, from Engineering to Philosophy and Art to MFL, all of which aim to create enriching experiences for all of the pupils. This year’s theme of Connections and Communication is relevant to all of us, especially at Dulwich with this being a Dulwich College Olympiad year. Last month, the Olympiad took place in Singapore with over 150 JAGS and Dulwich College Senior School pupils collaborating in Music, Art, Drama, and Sport. Many connections were made all over the world through this incredible opportunity. In the Junior School at Dulwich College, we have reconnected with our international schools in China, Singapore and South Korea, and many of these schools will be hosting their Symposiums on this theme at the same time. We hope to share their experiences with the International Ambassadors over the coming weeks. Today, sessions will be led by teachers and specialists from across the College and JAGS Juniors and beyond. Here at Dulwich College, we are fortunate enough to be welcoming Ashley John-Baptiste, a broadcast journalist, presenter and ambassador for the Fostering Network. Ashley will be talking about his incredible life experiences and how he communicates important messages as a broadcast journalist. In addition to this, we will also be welcoming Asha Hylton, a Deaf registered nurse at King’s College Hospital. Asha will be talking about overcoming barriers in communication and her work as a front- line member of staff. Our thanks go to Ashley, Asha and all of our presenters for the time and care they have taken to create and deliver their sessions. We hope that all of the children have a great day and that their experience of ‘Free Learning’ answers and raises questions, and provides an opportunity to go beyond the curriculum.

Empathy Symposium Highlights 2023
Dulwich College Activities The Psychology and Power of Non-Verbal Communication Ever wondered how long it takes to assess a person or a situation? Why can we do this so quickly, but without any words being said? Humans are incredibly sensitive to understanding our surroundings and other people without directly communicating with words. Our eyes, our face, our bodies, our appearance tell us so much about our thoughts and feelings in an instant, but we use these cues to reach so many other conclusions. Dr T Griffiths
Bridge Building In teams of 3-4, children need to build a model bridge that can hold 1.5-2kg in weight and span a distance of 30cm. Resources cost money and teams will be given different budgets. Mr A Lawson Walking with a friend in the Dark Learning about the life of Helen Keller, students will take part in a Sensory Experience Walk and complete the session learning to use British Sign Language (BSL) to an upbeat pop song! Mrs J Parker
Facial Expressions How do we communicate with each other just by a look? Through playing games, such as empathy bingo, we will learn how a mere look can convey great meaning! Mrs L Shaw Djembe Drumming Experience the complex language of the djembe drum where rhythms are used to communicate emotions and stories, as well as to create connections by bringing people together. Miss J Wilcox
Messages in Circuits: Build your own Morse Code machine and communicate with electricity Morse code was key to early communication systems. Create your own Morse Code machine, and practice sending and decoding messages. We will discuss how electrical circuits relate to communication systems and form the foundation principles for more complex communication by telegraph, telephones and the internet. Mrs R Sym
Signs and symbols When we think about communication we may think about words first. But what about all the communicating we do through signs and symbols? From traffic signs to food labelling, and all sorts in between, we will explore their meanings and uses. Ms J Green
Cryptic Scavenger Hunt Mixed pairs (with iPads) will deduce cryptic clues and then photograph the answer around the Junior College Campus. The starting letter of each clue will spell a word which relates to the symposium theme. Ms J Gordon Birdsong How do birds communicate? Can you identify the different birdsongs? Why have different birdsongs evolved in the way they have, and how are they continuing to change? Ms R Diamond
Carpe diem! How to connect with a Roman Salvete omnes! Pupils will learn some basic conversational Latin, including how to get by at a local market, how to get to the right place in the bath house and how to hurl insults at your worst enemy. We will also look at some fascinating connections between Latin and English, and explore some journeys which our language has taken over 2000 years. Miss F Cooke
The Art of Protest Explore how artists through time have used their work to communicate to others about a cause they believe in. Have a go at making your own protest art for an issue you feel passionately about. Miss R Northcott Squiggles or Digits? Investigate how number systems vary all over the world. What makes a number system work? Can you decode a different number system and solve the pu zz le of digits and squiggles? Mr E Wickstead

Cartoon Communications Explore how the famous artist Christoph Niemann takes everyday objects and through clever positioning and doodles, changes the meaning entirely. We will then be inspired to create our own artwork, starting with everyday objects and photographing our outcomes. Together we will explore how the different outcomes reflect how everyone has varying interpretations of artwork and has each communicated something different. Miss Fewell

communication skills, together we will create an uplifting song about what connects us all. Learn a new fun sung chorus, write a rap verse in small groups, and add in some movement or body percussion. Mrs Pochin

Mrs Martin Possible Present In this philosophy decision-based activity you will explore how human connections are formed through receiving and giving gifts. Mr Earnshaw
Connections and Communication in foreign languages. During this session, you will be learning how to understand how foreign people feel when they are trying to learn or speak English. We will focus on German and Italian native speakers (which we are!) and we will ask you to have a go at speaking those languages, to show you how it feels to be a “foreign speaker”! By sharing this experience with us you will be able to connect and communicate with others better. It will be interactive and lots of fun!
Kate Royal We are delighted to welcome soprano Kate Royal as one of our keynote speakers. Kate will be sharing her expertise as an acclaimed award winning Opera singer.
