50TH ANNIVERSARY

BEATTIE FLANIGAN CONSULTING ENGINEERS - PROUDLY INDEPENDENT SPECIALISTS IN LOW CARBON BUILDING DESIGN… Innovators in building services design S ince May, 1971, Beattie Flanigan Consulting Engineers has pushed the boundaries of what design and

engineering can achieve. The practice was born of its founders’ conviction that a small, independent, local approach to engineering would lead to work of greater quality and enduring relevance within the Northern Ireland construction sector. The five founding partners: Bill Beattie, Harry Flanigan, Ernie Gilmore, Stanly Hamilton, Bob Buick along with Liz Buick (part-time secretary) were previously

employees of National Industrial Fuel Services (NIFS) on the Antrim Road, Belfast. Faced with a multi-national company buy-out and forced staff relocation to England, the team resisted, thereby securing the long-term future operation of the firm within Northern Ireland. Starting out in offices on the Antrim Road, Beattie Flanigan has relocated a number of times before moving to its present location in Castlereagh in 2005. In the early days, Beattie Flanigan was renowned for its in-depth specialism and expertise in the design of steam boiler houses, particularly in hospitals. However, over the intervening years the practice evolved quickly into a multidisciplinary mechanical and electrical engineering consultancy, working across many sectors and with a wide and varied client base. Many of those relationships established with clients and architectural practices in the early years of the practice are still going strong today. For over 50 years, Beattie Flanigan has

been a place where creative people can develop their talents, collaborate with like-minded colleagues and produce incredible work. All employees are offered the opportunity to train and study to become Chartered Engineers, as Managing Director, Jason Fisher explained, “I started off as the office junior. I never thought when I walked in that I had any chance of one day running the show; that was like a pipe dream. But that’s the benefit of being a small, local independent company, like Beattie Flanigan. I say to all our staff, keep working hard and this could be yours some day! They may not want that, but the potential career progression is there. “We like to push them to go on and do their degree, get more experienced and

become Chartered. It does pay off.” Looking to the future, this specialist in sustainable, healthy building design is well prepared and resourced to accommodate the challenge of net zero building services. “Reducing carbon emissions is what’s going to fix the problem,” said Jason, “and that’s what we do. It’s our bread and butter. The COP26 climate summit set out its demands, but with little detail on how we as an industry should achieve them. Putting that plan into practice is going to be the real challenge. Over the next five years, engineering is going to be as much about educating and persuading clients to pay for sustainable building services. The technology to achieve net zero already exists.”
