November 17, 1946 WHY DO PEOPLE DRINK? Gal. 5:19-21; Isa. 5:11, 12. The lusts of the flesh demand satis faction. There are people who desire opium, morphine, codeine, heroin, co caine, and tobacco. All of these have an evil effect upon the body. Liquor is just another one of the many en ticements Satan offers in the place of the Lord Jesus Christ. One may ab stain from the use of all the above- mentioned drugs and still not be a Christian. The devil has some lovely people who live beautiful, clean, attrac tive lives free from all bad habits, but are lost because they have never ac cepted Christ Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. The use of liquor is a curse that has not one good reason for exist ing. It gives a temporary relief, a fad ing joy, a feeling of independence, and stirs the passions. It fills cemeteries, divorce courts, orphanages, and hospi tals. It should be absolutely avoided in every form.
2. WE MUST HAVE THE PEACE OF GOD. Phil. 4:7. The peace of God is the peace which relates to daily living. When once the Christian sees that his life is in the hands of his Lord, then fear disap pears and calm fills the soul. When he sees that the Spirit of God will lead in matters of daily living and will di rect the steps, the heart rests in this gracious leadership and is not fearful of the consequences. When the Chris tian realizes that the Lord goes before to make the crooked places straight and to remove hindrances, then again there is quietness and fearful appre hension disappears. When we remem ber that the Lord has said, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay,” then we cease to worry about our enemies. We leave the handling of them to our lovely Lord and let His peace fill our own hearts. 3. WE MUST HAVE PEACE WITH OTHERS. Rom. 12:18. Peace with others is not always based on equity or justice. It is usually based on forgiveness and kind ness. Christ could have come back after His resurrection and caused a great deal of trouble for Pilate, Herod, the high priest, the soldiers, and all those who mistreated Him. He did not, however, for He came to save and not to condemn. He was willing that even those who had been most cruel to Him should put their trust in Him and receive the benefits of His vicari ous death on the cross. He gave Him self for His enemies. We must be like this in our own lives if we would live in peace with others. Of course, this principle cannot be carried out to the limit because there are wicked people and wicked nations who, unless pre vented, would gladly take everything from those who are weak. The hu man heart is very wicked so the Lord words this instruction as He does in the Scripture before us. 4. WE MUST HAVE A MESSAGE OF PEACE. Acts 10:36. Most people do not know the way of peace. The Lord says that the world does not know the way of peace be cause they are unacquainted with the Lord Jesus Christ, ignorant of His Word, and are at enmity with every influence that would curb their sinful impulses. We should preach plainly that Christ made peace by the blood of His cross. We should make it clear that this Lord of peace said, "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you” (John 14:27). We should explain fully that Christ made peace by the blood of His cross and that there can be no peace apart from the battle of Calvary. There is a false peace in the world based partly on ignorance, part ly on wrong teaching, and partly on presumption. There is no comfort in any of this. We must have God’s peace founded on God’s terms, and brought to us through God’s Son. OCTOBER, 1946

Natural Bridge, Virginia For Those Who Have Topics 1. WORRY? 1 Pet. 5:7. In this Scripture, we find God’s remedy for worry and care. Never once does God suggest that we should pay the saloon keeper to get rid of our worries. He invites us to come to the Lord of Glory and be rid of troubles for nothing. Liquor does not remove the cause of worry; it only dulls the sensibilities to it. It is as if one should take a sleeping potion in a burning building in order to avoid worrying about the fire. One might as well shut his eyes on the highway in order DRINK OFFERS RELIEF FROM
