Dear Family, Over the school year, your child has grown as a reader, writer, and thinker. As the school year ends, keep in mind that summer break is an important time for continuing that growth. Summer break is a time when many students fall behind in important reading and writing skills. For this reason, summer learning programs play an important role in preventing learning loss. High quality summer learning and enrichment experiences can help students maintain and enhance knowledge and skills gained during the previous school year. They can also spark students’ academic interest and improve attendance during the school year. Reading at home—together and independently—will also help your child develop a love of reading and learning. Here are some suggestions to help you and your child make the most of summer reading: ▶ Help your child find books and other reading materials to enjoy. ▶ Encourage your child to find a quiet place, free from distractions, for reading. ▶ Ask your child to tell you in his or her own words what is happening in a story or article. ▶ When you read aloud to your child, occasionally pause and ask questions about characters and events in a text, and have your child support his or her answers with information from the reading. ▶ Ask your child to share his or her thoughts on a story or article after he or she has finished reading. ▶ Show an interest in what your child is reading. Ask your child to read aloud to you, or read alongside your child. A discussion about a favorite book can become much more meaningful for a child if he or she knows you’ve read it, too.
Here are some other ways that you can help your child become a lifelong reader:
▶ Be a reading role model. Let your child see you and other family members read and enjoy books, magazines, and newspapers. Have informal conversations about your reading experiences.
▶ Help your child build a personal library at home. ▶ If possible, visit the public library with your child.
Have a wonderful summer!
