Thank You, Mom!

Being Raised by a Strong, Intelligent Woman

W hen you’re a kid, you never realize just how much your mom makes an impact on your life. I feel very privileged — and I only very recently realized this — to have had a mom who was a strong woman in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) field. In fact, I’ve been lucky to have been raised by a strong woman and have many strong women in my life today. My mom, Kris, was a mechanical engineer for a long time, and she filled many different roles within product management, pricing, and more. My maternal grandmother was a teacher who earned a graduate degree during a time when women were expected to only be homemakers. As a child, I was never fully aware of how incredible it was that my grandma and my mom were in the fields that they were in and how much success they had there. They fought back against a society that told them they couldn’t do it, and they set an incredible example for my family. Growing up, my mom was always encouraging us to be the best we could be. She was strong, and to this day, she’s a major influence in my life. She set rules and expectations for us, and that helped shape me into who I am today. We were held to a high standard, and that’s what kept me motivated. I’ve always been interested in the sciences and math, and I like to think that comes from my mom’s influence. Today, we sometimes make comparisons about our respective jobs, and she understands the mechanical issues and pitfalls that I occasionally run into while helping a patient heal. I can bounce “I can bounce ideas offher, and no matter what she’s doing, howbusy she is, or what time of the day it is, mymom makes herself available to listen and offer her perspective. She nevermakes me feel like I’mbeing a burden.”

ideas off her, and no matter what she’s doing, how busy she is, or what time of the day it is, my mom makes herself available to listen and offer her perspective. She never makes me feel like I’m being a burden. She listens, and it’s been so helpful as I’ve grown in my physical therapy career. It’s been so great to share this experience with her. As kids, I’m sure we all took our moms for granted, but today, I’m proud to be my mom’s son. I often look fondly back on our traditions and memories together. In fact, to this day, it doesn’t feel like a holiday without her famous baked mac and cheese! This dish has the perfect amount of cheese and crispy breadcrumbs on top. It is the side dish that puts all meals over the edge; there isn’t a meal it doesn’t make better! In all seriousness, as we approach Mother’s Day, I can’t help but think about how much my mom means to me. I hope to spend the day showing her how much I appreciate her and letting her know how her support helps me each day. To be raised by such a strong woman is something I don’t take lightly. She helped me become who I am today, simply by being an amazing woman and mom.

Thank you for everything you have done, Mom. I love you!

Health Benefits of Family Gardening

Give Your Kid the Gift of a Green Thumb

Yes, there will always be football season, basketball season, and soccer season, but right now, it’s gardening season. That means it’s time to roll up your sleeves and play in the dirt. If you’ve been searching for a way to get the kids away from technology and engaged with the real world, gardening is the perfect activity for the whole family to enjoy. Not only is it fun, but it’s also beneficial for your kids’ development. For example, gardening can improve your children’s analytical abilities. As Dr. Wendy Matthews says, “Gardening exercises important reasoning, initiation, planning, and organization skills.” Furthermore, several studies, including one at Texas A&M University, suggest that gardening improves a child’s attitude toward fruits and vegetables and may make them more likely to choose them as snacks. Gardening helps kids identify with where their food is coming from, and nothing tastes better than a freshly picked strawberry or pea pod they grew themselves. Jack Gilbert, a scientist at the University of Chicago and a parent himself, and his co-author, Rob Knight, emphasize the health benefits of garden time in their book, “Dirt Is Good: The Advantage of Germs for Your Child’s Developing Immune System.” The two found that exposure to different microbes, like those found in a garden, strengthens a child’s immune system and makes them less likely to develop allergies.

If this is your first time gardening, you don’t need much to get started. Grab a few shovels, a pair of gloves for each family member, and fresh potting soil, and you’ll be set. Then, you can decide together which plants you’d like to grow! Carrots are fun because of the surprise factor — just imagine your child discovering that the part they eat grows below the ground! Peas are tasty and fairly easy to grow, as are strawberries. The options really are endless. Depending on the growing season in your area, you can choose to buy seeds or opt for rooted plants.

Last but certainly not least, the best part of gardening as a family is the healthy, fresh produce you’ll get to enjoy all summer long!

“I was referred to Gilbert PT by a family friend after my craniotomy surgery. When I started, I could not walk, drive, or balance for more than 2–3 seconds. After four weeks I was able to walk completely independently … in six weeks I was driving … and in the eighth week, graduation! Abbey, Matt and Julian were amazing, knowledgeable, and a fun team to work with.” –Sam T. Why We Love PT

Taking Care of Mom Prenatal, Postpartum, and Parenting Safety for Mothers and Grandparents

BRAIN THERAPY! Once the baby is born, postpartum physical therapy can help a mom recover. Childbirth is extremely taxing on a woman’s body, but physical therapy can offer healing through movement. In particular, postpartum physical therapy can repair the damage done to the new mother’s pelvic floor and help strengthen it. As the child ages, it’s important that parents and grandparents safely care for their new bundle of joy. As you pick up toys and reach into the crib, practice safe lifting techniques to avoid stressing the back and shoulder muscles. Likewise, carrying Moms are incredible. In addition to being their child’s go-to source for boo-boo fixing and cuddles, moms put their bodies at risk during pregnancy and birth to bring their children into this world. Pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum can be some of the most vulnerable times in a mother’s life, but proactive care is possible. As a woman’s body changes during pregnancy, an increase in hormones, body weight, and fluid can make expectant mothers more prone to injuries. The goal of physical therapy during pregnancy is to strengthen a mother’s body to avoid these injuries and prepare for childbirth and postpartum recovery. This includes targeting the pelvic floor, lower back, and abdominal regions through exercise.

diaper bags or a baby for too long can stress your forearms, elbows, and shoulders. Regularly stretch and use a stroller or enlist a partner’s help to offload some of the strain. Consult with a physical therapist if issues persist.

As summer approaches, grandparents may start spending more time with their grandchildren, too! While this is exciting, don’t let it overshadow your grandchild’s safety needs or your own. Stick to low impact activities, like walking, biking, or golfing to care for your joint health and longevity. A physical therapist can help you determine which troublesome areas to monitor and identify healthful ways to alleviate any ailments.

At Gilbert Physical Therapy, we believe all moms are supermoms, and we want to do our part to help them find relief and support during and after pregnancy. If you or a loved one are expecting, physical therapist Abbey McMillen is Gilbert Physical Therapy’s on-site pregnancy health expert.
