ENGLISH LEARNER SUPPORT BEGINNING Ensure children understand the meaning of each Blend and Read word by sharing pictures or gestures. INTERMEDIATE Explain that some of the Blend and Read words, such as bat and can , have multiple meanings. Guide children to understand each meaning. ADVANCED/ADVANCED HIGH Challenge children to identify the Blend and Read words with multiple meanings. ALL LEVELS As needed, tell children the names of the pictures as they complete the Know It, Show It Activity Book p. 67. CORRECT AND REDIRECT If a child mispronounces a word in the Blend and Read lines, say the word, call attention to the mispronounced phonic element, and help the child blend the word. Have the child practice rereading the whole line, and be sure to celebrate improvements in decoding fluency! 3 Review For Line 3, have children read the words chorally. 4 Challenge If children are ready for a challenge, have them read the words with consonant blends in Line 4 and share how they figured themout. 5 Sentences For Lines 5–6, call on children to blend selected decodable words. Then have the group read the sentences chorally. TEACHER TIP SWITCH IT UP! When children are proficient at decoding, switch from Sound-by-Sound Blending to the more streamlined Continuous Blending in each lesson: /p/-/ăăă/-/nnn/, pan!
