ACUPUNCTURE NOW COVERED BY MEDICARE FOR BACK PAIN!
In a landmark ruling, Medicare has announced as of January 21, 2020, they will begin covering Acupuncture services for beneficiaries with chronic low back pain. Those actively enrolled in Medicare are now eligible to receive up to 12 Acupuncture treatments over a 90 day period. An additional 8 treatments will be covered for those demonstrating clinical improvement, for a total of 20 sessions annually. In acknowledging how common and debilitating back pain can be, the Centers for Medicare Services (CMS) stated “We are dedicated to increasing alternatives to prescription opioids and believe that covering Acupuncture for chronic low back pain is in the best interest of Medicare patients.” As a key strategy in defeating our country’s opioid crisis, Congress and the administration have sought to expand coverage for non-opioid pain-management treatments to reduce reliance on narcotics as well as substance abuse. We are excited to share this wonderful news with our Medicare beneficiaries who now have access to Acupuncture services as a covered treatment option to reduce pain and enhance recovery!
