This epiphany makes us realise that rather than an arrogant, virile individual, the boy is in fact sensitive, self- conscious and troubled. It makes us question how we view adolescents. The delayed revelation was used to create the negative images about the boy in the reader’s mind; they needed to be under an illusion to later see the reality; the boy has a tragically shallow view of both himself and women, describing the girl as ‘mine’. His dis- illusion is positive, despite the sombre tone - ‘I’m always alone’, as he is breaking free from commercialism and its insatiable hunger. This was inspired by Murakami - ‘’Our hunger - that hunger that had felt as if it could go on forever - vanished as the dawn was breaking…. Afterward, she rested her head on my shoulder
