of communication, allowing a more effective bond to develop between the persona and the reader. A structural technique that I employ is starting the story in medias res: a device that allows me to work around the inherent limitations of the short story format whilst giving the impression that this text is an excerpt from an endless piece. The technique was inspired by ‘The Kangaroo Communiqué’ which begins ‘Say hey’, launching the reader into the middle of the story, which adds to the theme of alienation sustained throughout.
