RIGOR MORTIS

It is said that on the cusp of death the brain releases numerous endorphins which stimulate a plethora of emotions: euphoria, elation, excitement… a moment so heart-rending, yet beautiful. In those few moments before death it is believed that one’s entire life will flash before one’s eyes, but others say that only certain memories will rise from the depths of one’s subconscious, the most treasured of them all. Before departing from this life it is said that one experiences an intense state of transcendent happiness. * Every moment was so precious then . Hand-painting strawberries on the swings, playing hide-and-seek in the rain, watching the stars shine bright in the night sky. There Maya was, attempting to count all the way up to 30, poor girl. Her mind wandered off so very often that she always lost count and had to start all over again. ‘1, 2, 3…Here I come. READY OR NOT!’ It was rare for her to play with Maya, but of late she had been doing so more than usual. It was good to see her smile. It had been so long. ‘Found you!’ ‘You clever, clever girl! Whatever shall I do with you?’ She picked Maya up and spun her around: just like any other mother, she lived to see her children smile. We should have spent more time together, but it really is true…
