“And Lucy was alone again.”

In my story, I use symbolism to create a link between light and truth. Lucy, the main character, ‘flinches’ as light passes over her; the light reveals elements of the outside world and she happily allows the ‘darkness to engulf her again’. Graham Greene’s ‘The End of the Party’ is the opposite, with characters wanting to stay in the light and darkness portrayed as a bat creating a sense of danger.Throughout this story, I aim to create a sense of suspicion and danger, so I use symbolism via the anthropomorphism and warping of everyday objects from the street and the house to express emotions; this was inspired by John Cheever’s ‘The Enormous Radio’, where everyday appliances interfere in the characters’ lives.
