A VERY SPECIAL FAMILY VACATION RECONNECT WI TH A FAMI LY VACAT ION With the kids out of school, warm

JUNE 2019

Their wedding was a destination wedding, taking place in beautiful, sunny Palm Springs, California, at a local country club. The wedding itself was stunning. Eric and Jessica couldn’t have planned it better — the weather was perfect, and it was a beautiful time of year when everything was beginning to turn green. It was a beautiful day, and I am very happy to have shared this wonderful, happy moment with them. Family and friends traveled from all over to celebrate my son and his brand-new wife. With so many of them visiting for the wedding, we made time in the days after the wedding to explore the local area, with the highlight being our visit to the Joshua Tree National Park. We spent the entire day hiking its many trails, picnicking, and enjoying the time spent catching up with friends and family. I encourage my readers to give yourselves a well-deserved break this summer and spend some time with your families. Whether you’re going on a trip out of state or planning an afternoon picnic at your local park, my wish is that you have a wonderful, relaxing summer vacation!

always look forward to our family trips, as they allow us the chance to slow down and reconnect with one another. I find that I always return from a vacation feeling refreshed and ready to jump right back into my role as the owner of the business. My family and I started our annual trip a little early this year, as my youngest son, Eric, married his wife, Jessica, on March 23. They’d been together for a long while before they married, and both have fantastic jobs. Eric is a police officer in Merrillville, Indiana, and Jessica is a math teacher at Lake Central School District in Northwest Indiana.

weather, and longer days and nights, the summer months are the perfect time to plan a vacation with your family. Whether you’re planning a cross-country road trip, a magical trip to Disney, a camping trip, or even a staycation in your hometown, family vacations allow you to step away from the routine of daily life and bond by spending quality time together. At least once every year, my family plans a vacation for us to break away from our daily lives and simply enjoy each other’s company. With the hustle and bustle of running the business, as well as the fact that my kids are grown, I

There are so many options, and it can be difficult to determine which services provide child- appropriate content AND won’t cost you an arm and a leg. Luckily there are plenty of affordable platforms that have family-friendly content. NETFLIX AND HULU Known as two of the most popular streaming services that offer family-friendly content, Netflix and Hulu feature plenty of shows and movies that are perfect for kids. For families who own smart TVs or a digital media device, like Roku or Apple TV, both services are available after a quick app download. Both of these platforms have parental controls, allowing parents to set up accounts and restrictions for what their children can watch. You’ll never miss an episode of “Ninjago” or “Sesame Street” again! Their prices are reasonable as well, with Netflix plans ranging from $8.99–$15.99 a month and Hulu being slightly cheaper at For parents who are already Amazon Prime members, Amazon Prime Video is included with their membership. F rom Cus t ome r Se r v i ce t o Ope r a t i ons Manage r — 20 Yea r s and Coun t i ng

For this issue’s Team Member Spotlight, we want to introduce our Operations Manager,

Rhonda Salgado. Rhonda began working at Reid & Pederson 20 years ago when John and Kevin Reid merged their company with Mr. Pederson’s business.

Upon joining our team, Rhonda became the first person many of our clients talked to when calling our office. Now, Rhonda oversees scheduling, customer service, employee benefits, and several other aspects of the business. “Starting off, it was only John and Kevin running the business,” Rhonda says. “They were great with customer service and day-to-day stuff, but they didn’t have much time for important things like hiring, employee benefits, and time cards. So, that’s where I come in.” Before joining Reid & Pederson, Rhonda was a property manager at a local property management company. At one point, her company needed work done on the drains of several buildings, and Kevin and John were hired to complete the job. They got to know Rhonda more and were quite impressed with her work ethic and the way she managed her team, so much so that once they merged companies with Mr. Pederson, they asked her to join their team! It wasn’t only Kevin and John who were eager to get Rhonda on their team; the feeling was actually mutual. “Having worked with Kevin and John in the past, I had seen their work ethic and how they handled jobs in person. I was really impressed with everything they did. They ran a business focused on honesty and doing an excellent job for every single customer. It was these characteristics that first attracted me to their business, and I was more than happy to join their team when they asked me.” Out of the office, Rhonda loves to spend most of her time with her family. Her two children, Luis and Isabel, play for several sports teams, so she’s often running them back and forth between their different activities and watching their games. “Family time is the most important thing to me,” she states. “I love watching my kids do something they enjoy and cheering them on.”

won’t be available through this new service as Disney wants to keep its family-friendly approach.

AN INNOVAT I VE SOLUT ION TO CLEAR ING BACKED UP OVERHEAD SEWERS THE ZIPDRAIN When faced with an overhead sewer, many drain cleaning professionals encounter the same dreaded problem: It’s nearly impossible to unclog and clean them without creating a disastrous mess. John and Kevin Reid have found a solution by developing the ZipDrain Overhead Containment Tool. The ZipDrain line consists of two patented tools that allow technicians to quickly and cleanly clear backed up overhead sewers and drains, as well as hydro-jet them safely and cleanly without any mess. The ZipDrain Overhead Containment Tool allows for quick and easy containment of a backed up overhead sewer. This means that no mess is left in our customers’ homes or on our hardworking technicians. ZipDrain also speeds up the process of cleaning a surcharged overhead sewer, making it

controlled indoor jetting for various applications including kitchen sinks, sewers, floor drains, and urinals, to name a few.

The Jetter Tool is safe for technicians due to its clear body, which allows them to see when the jetter head is pulled back into the body. This extra safety feature prevents debris, waste, and scale from spraying onto the technician and their surroundings. All of our technicians at Reid & Pederson are equipped with the ZipDrain tools for cleaning and jetting backed up overhead sewers. In fact, the ZipDrain is available for purchase online and is currently being used by countless sewer and drain cleaning professionals across the country with the same impressive results! ZipDrain is an innovative tool that is a reflection of John and Kevin’s commitment to their business. By thinking outside of the box, they created a tool that not only solves a current issue many sewer technicians face but also allows Reid and Pederson to go above and beyond in continuing to provide excellent customer service to our customers.

quicker for technicians to finish up one job and move onto the next.

The ZipDrain Jetter Tool allows technicians to safely hydro- jet lines inside any home or business. This tool provides

THE MYSTERY SPOT; SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA Advertising itself as a “gravitational anomaly,” this wacky spot in the middle of the redwood forest showcases a series of optical illusions such as balls rolling uphill and a cabin where visitors can lean toward the ground and appear to defy gravity. It might not be aliens, like some believe, but visitors of all ages will get a kick out of the illusions messing with their perception. Plus, the nearby hiking trails through the redwoods offer a free added experience. DINOSAUR LAND; WHITE POST, VIRGINIA It might not be Jurassic Park, but it’s still worth a look. Nestled in the greenery of Northern Virginia, this park has over 50 life-size statues of dinosaurs of all kinds. Tours are self- guided, parking is free, and children (or adults) with dinosaur obsessions are sure to smile and point out their favorites. It’s certainly something to “rawr” home about. Whether these spots are your destinations or you’re just passing through on your summer road trip, visiting these roadside attractions and others like them will add some fun to your travels.

The United States can be a weird place, and some landmarks definitely reflect that sentiment. Along almost every highway, bizarre landmarks

draw road trippers of all ages. Sometimes tourist traps aren’t worth the price of admission, but when you’re taking your summer road trip this year and your family needs a place to stop and stretch, these are three roadside

attractions worth checking out.

THE LOST SEA; SWEETWATER, TENNESSEE The Lost Sea is the largest underground lake in the U.S. Lying 140 feet beneath the surface, it’s a fun escape from the summer heat, since it’s 58 degrees year-round. Kids and adults alike can learn about the history and geology of the area on a guided tour through forest above and lake below. And afterward, you can stop by the general store, ice cream parlor, or cafe.
