WINNER: MATTHEW GRAHAM, RAHORAN LTD

Lowry Building & Civil Engineering Ltd has been honoured as the Building Company of the Year at the FMB Master Builder Awards 2023. The judging panel was impressed by the company’s “outstanding” submission, particularly its commitment to the ongoing development and support of staff. The firm’s substantial investment in its workforce, fostering growth and acknowledging their contributions, was highly commendable. Notably, the apprentice scheme played a pivotal role in passing on valuable knowledge from an aging workforce to the next generation. The judges also applauded Lowry Building & Civil Engineering Ltd for proactively developing skills and expertise, enabling a successful transition into the highly regulated Water sector. The Castlederg firm demonstrated resilience and adaptability by embracing changing working practices, skilfully navigating the challenges posed by Covid-19 and supply disruptions. Lowry Building & Civil Engineering Ltd has emerged as an industry leader, actively promoting the construction sector through its apprenticeship programmes and engaging with stakeholders. Its exceptional service is underpinned by effective communication with staff, consultants and clients. Furthermore, the successful expansion of the business into a new sector showcases its progressive mindset and strategic vision. Lowry Building & Civil Engineering Ltd’s accolade as Building Company of the Year reflects the firm’s unwavering commitment to excellence, its people and adaptability in an ever-evolving industry.

The panel was impressed by the exceptional comments Matthew received from his employer and found the apprentice very well deserving of his

high scoring. The judges declared he is a hard-working, talented apprentice who demonstrates a love of learning new skills. Matthew is very much a team player and willing to get involved in and assist in other areas of work if required. According to the team at Rahoran, Matthew has a great relationship with his course tutor, Alan, and loves to be challenged. He has been learning in both commercial and residential environments. Recently, the apprentice showed his skills in the refurbishment of a private home. He learned to put up stud walls, joists, roofing and door frames, but his favourite part was doing the wall panelling, a new skill he picked up instantly and with a level of detail and eye for accuracy that is second to none. Matthew shows extraordinary character and is extremely trustworthy. Thanks to the apprentice’s politeness and courteous manner, he will thrive in any job or situation. Matthew is also extremely kind: a family member of one of the staff had been on a ventilator for many months during the Covid pandemic. Matthew offered a listening ear to the staff member and continues to do so and show support. The apprentice will represent Northern Ireland at the 2023 National Master Builder Awards in London, on 22 September.
