Lowry Building & Civil Engineering Ltd delivered the regeneration and development of the Ballycopeland Windmill site in Millisle. The £1.2 million project included the construction of a visitor centre with a coffee shop, a new access road with car parking facilities and refurbishment of the existing miller’s cottage and kilnman’s house to complement the great historic value of the site. The judges highlighted the contractor’s commitment to preserving the original fabric of the building. LBCE employed the highest skilled tradesmen, sourcing a specialist and liaising with the Historic Environmental Division to ensure the chosen materials, paints and finishes were authentic, maintaining the visual aesthetics of the listed structure. Small Renovation Project
WINNER: JAMES WYLIE BUILDING & JOINERY
James Wylie Building & Joinery was named the winner of the Small Renovation Project awards for the addition of a kitchen extension to a private residence in Ballyclare. A structural design change required removal of a gable wall using props and pins to support two upper storeys on the restricted site. James Wylie provided an innovative bulkhead solution over the kitchen island to conceal a large steel beam and eliminate the need for a cooker hood. The Judges noted how professionally the firm dealt with the technical challenges on this build, with the client stating how the team was “always keen to improve plans or design, if needed.”
