A NOTE FROM THE DESK OF TJB
Welcome to the TJB Maternal Magic Annual Bull Sale XV. Although there has been much anxiety created in the political arena concerning current cattle prices, one thing is certain: we have unprecedentedly low cattle inventory, and that can’t change overnight. Consequently, the cow-calf sector should remain in the driver’s seat. Now is the time to invest in the quality of your commercial herd and position yourself for a more productive, efficient cowherd for the future. I chose this catchphrase for this year’s marketing strategy: “THE INDUSTRY CHASED NUMBERS. WE NEVER FORGOT THE COW!” Through my veterinary practice, particularly my embryo transfer practice, I have had the opportunity to watch the industry place increasing value on EPDs and index values. In my opinion, the monetary incentives associated with these selection tools have too often placed more emphasis on the number and less on the individual animal. Consequently, functionality and the core traits necessary for the commercial cattleman to remain profitable have too often received less emphasis. I have always believed that fertility, functionality — feet, udders and structure — and longevity in both the bull battery and the cowherd are among the most important criteria. At TJB, we continue to pay attention to EPDs and indexes, but we are not striving to produce extreme numbers at the expense of the functional cow. These are the core traits we have maintained: • Fertility
• Feet and legs • Udder quality
• Structural soundness • Moderate mature size • Longevity • Functional bulls that can work for years
WE NEVER FORGOT THE COW! Please give Cody or me a call if you have any questions about the sale. We certainly welcome your visit prior to the sale if you have the time. It is our pleasure to visit with you individually and help with your selection.
