Dancing Through Genres: An Interview with El Mukuka

El Mukuka takes us on a journey through his music, travels, and passion for his homeland, shedding light on the challenges and triumphs of a global artist. Sound Press Magazine (SPM): El Mukuka, your ability to blend genres is commendable. How do you approach crafting sets that seamlessly fuse African and Western elements within the realm of house music? El Mukuka (EM): Thank you! As a fusion artist, my goal is to create sets that represent my unique style — bringing together African and Western influences in the house music landscape. I look for tracks rich in melody and harmony, as melody is my muse. My sets are a journey where I draw listeners into a world that harmoniously blends cultural flavors, resonating with people from diverse backgrounds. SPM: Your performances are known for their energy and engagement. Could you share some of your tactics for keeping the crowd captivated? EM: DJing is an art that goes beyond the music — it's about crafting an experience. To keep the crowd engaged, I strike a balance between familiar tunes and unexpected tracks, playing with emotions to create dynamic shifts. This "tension and release" approach makes my sets feel like a captivating journey.

I also interact with the audience on a personal level, sharing positive energy that fuels the synergy between the crowd and me. SPM: Touring extensively across Africa and Europe has its rewards and challenges. What are some of the experiences you've gained from being a globetrotting DJ? EM: Touring is a whirlwind of experiences, offering both growth and insights. While sleep deprivation can be tough, the opportunity to connect with new cultures, sounds, and audiences is truly enriching. It's a humbling journey that widens your perspective on the world. Touring reminds me that music is a universal language that transcends borders.

SPM: As a successful producer, could you walk us through your creative process?

EM: My creative process varies with each track, but often, I start with a demo vocal. Having a vocal foundation guides my creativity, allowing me to explore new directions while maintaining a sense of focus. From harmonizing melodies to crafting lyrics, I invest time to ensure every element aligns perfectly. The process is fluid, and I embrace the flow of inspiration. SPM: You're a vocal advocate for Zambian music. What excites you about the future of music in Zambia?
