PLANNING COACHING FOR NEXT SEASON And then it is, of course, time to start planning for next season. Review your club’s players and evaluate what sort of coaching they are most in need of. If it is something you can’t provide yourself, think about asking nearby Graded Coaches or one of the Academies for help. Being able to start the 2027 season with a clear timetable of coaching will help your club’s players get off to a flying start. NEW GOLF CROQUET COACHING MANUAL One of the many projects the Coaching Committee has been working on this season is the new Golf Croquet Coaching Manual – Beginners. This is currently in final edit and will soon become available. I encourage all coaches to look at it and use it in their coaching as soon as it is published. NEW GRADE 1 COACH QUALIFICATION COURSE Another project this season has been the development of the Grade 1 Coach Qualification course. This was first run at Nottingham in the spring and has since been refined. It will be run again this October, at the Chiltern Academy. AN AC COACHING GAME: 5-3-1 CROQUET 5-3-1 Croquet, developed at Crake Valley, provides straightforward practice with the chance to retake shots and take bisques as needed. It works well as a solo practice routine, or as a one-to-one coaching tool when played with alternate strokes. It is also a good-natured game in its own right (see below) offering excellent opportunities to develop technique and tactics for players of any ability, particularly those in the early stages of their croquet journey Set out balls with an easy roquet on partner ball at hoop 1, a pivot, and a pioneer at hoop 2. Set a concise time limit, say 30 minutes for short croquet, 45 minutes for full lawn 18 point, 60 minutes for full lawn 26 point. Play round to the peg. Score five points for each hoop. Deduct three points for each bisque taken. Shots may be replaced and replayed: penalty one point. If time permits, continue with partner ball from where the balls lie, and on round to peg-out. Each ball pegged out adds five points to the total. The club has developed 5-3-1 into a friendly league. A player can partner any or all of the other players who have entered, and can play as many games as wanted. The league winner is the person with the highest average score through the season.
