Aviation and aerospace innovation are key drivers of Florida’s economy. Continuing advances in the aerospace realm will require a workforce skilled in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The Gaetz Aerospace Institute, a dual-enrollment program at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, is meeting that need. The Gaetz Aerospace Institute (GAI) prepares students with the foundation they need to earn undergraduate degrees in STEM fields and move into technology-related careers. GAI offers academic enrichment programs and dual-enrollment. Students in more than 150 participating high schools can earn university credits from Embry-Riddle from their high-school campus. In the face of such a pressing need, what hinders STEM education? The National Conference of State Legislatures cites an underdeveloped teacher workforce as a significant barrier to integrating STEM instruction. To combat this lack of resources, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University formed a cooperative partnership with Florida’s secondary schools in 2013. /// Annnual investment of $3 million by the State of Florida.
