The Mentors Who Helped Shape My Leadership Lessons From Stucky and Kermit

Before the pandemic, we switched our point of sale system, a crucial business element. Shortly after we did this, Kermit implemented the same software for his team, and they called us often during the transition. When his install team arrived, Kermit wouldn’t let them start until they called me and ensured all my remaining issues were resolved. I hadn’t expected anything in return, but he knew that with his position in the industry, he had a larger platform and could use his influence to help me.

My father taught me almost everything I know, and I owe much of where I am to his guidance. Mentors like him are invaluable in shaping our lives and offering insights that help us rethink challenges. Sometimes, mentors are the people who quietly help shape your path, offering advice when it’s most needed. In honor of National Mentoring Month, I wanted to highlight two people whose mentorship has profoundly impacted my business and career. They may not be people I call up like, “Hey, mentor, I need help,” but they have taught me valuable lessons about leading and running a company.

For him, business is about relationships, and he’s gone above and beyond for us many times. Once, when my dad and I were going to order a new dry-cleaning machine from him, he put us in his truck, drove us half an hour, and showed us a better solution. He

His approach to sales isn’t all about the transaction; it’s about protecting relationships and providing value. He always says, “You can’t outgive the universe, so put value in the world, and the universe will pay you back.” He taught

They have a common theme: Invest in your team and the people around you. Though their approaches are slightly different, both have taught me that success hinges on relationships. At its core, a business is only as strong as its people, and to be a great leader, you have to provide your team with the right tools. I owe so much of where I am to my great mentors. business for multiple generations. My dad told me Stucky was the person to call if I needed anything for the company, and over the years, he’s become a friend.

Then there’s Kermit, a seasoned professional with a knack for systems. I first met him through the Association of Wedding Gown Specialists and his consulting company for dry cleaners, Methods for Management. Even though I’m no longer a member of Methods for Management, I still consider him a friend I can call if I’m in a bind or want to know what direction he would take. He’s been in the trenches, running large operations, and always ready to offer real- world, battle-tested advice. I’ve always felt confident in the information I received from him because it’s rooted in experience.

Move over, overconsumption. It’s time to put down our wallets and declutter our lives. Welcome to the latest TikTok craze: under consumption core! Imagine a world where last year’s still-functioning iPhone is celebrated, and the only time you dash for more food is when your produce starts to look more like a science experiment. That’s underconsumption core — embracing the essentials, bypassing the fluff. Undercomsumption core is about stepping off the relentless consumer conveyor belt to admire and utilize what you already own. It’s a shoutout to sustainability and a bow to minimalism, all rolled into one. DECLUTTER LIKE A PRO Starting on this journey? Kick it off with a decluttering session Marie Kondo would be proud of. This isn’t just about creating space — it’s about reshaping your buying habits. Once your space is clutter-free, you gain clarity on what truly matters. You’ll find yourself asking, “Do I need this, or does Instagram think I do?” The goal here is to filter out the noise of fleeting trends and focus on quality that lasts longer than a social media cycle. REPURPOSE AND REJOICE Learning to repurpose is key for those who love to shop till they drop. That old dress hiding in the back of your closet? Snip it into a chic crop top. Are your jeans a tad too long? Hello, trendy shorts. Repurposing isn’t just thrifty; it’s creative. It scratches the itch for something new without the wallet woes. Plus, it’s eco-friendly! PLAN, DON’T PANIC BUY Impulse buys? A big no-no in the underconsumption playbook. Start each month with a plan. What do you have? What do you genuinely need? Make thoughtful decisions that value durability over disposability. This way, you’re not just saving money — you’re curating a collection of items that truly enhance your life. When you embrace underconsumption core, you tidy up your space and upgrade your life philosophy. You save money and cultivate an environment that boosts your mental health and productivity. It’s about making peace with possessing less and enjoying life more. So, next time you feel the urge to splurge, remember: Less is more, and in the case of underconsumption core, less is everything. Don’t Let Dirty Pillows Disrupt Your Zzzs FLUFF UP YOUR SLEEP ROUTINE

If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to get better sleep, it’s the perfect time to refresh your pillowcases and pillows. Pillows can accumulate body oils, sweat, and allergens that can negatively impact your skin and even cause sleepless nights. Cleaning them regularly ensures they stay in good condition, and you will wake up feeling refreshed. Get ready to catch some serious Zzzs with these top tricks to keep your pillows fresh.

You should clean your pillows at least every 3–6 months or as

needed. Most pillows can be washed directly in the washing machine on a gentle cycle with warm water. It’s essential to read the label for care instructions as some pillows have different fillings, like memory foam, that must be hand-washed. Remove the pillowcase and pre-treat stains with a small amount of

detergent. Washing two pillows in the machine at a time is a wise idea to help balance the load. If you are going to machine-dry them, gently squeeze out excess water and add a tennis ball or dryer balls to ensure they keep their shape. If you don’t want to deal with the pillow problems alone, Janet Davis Cleaners is here to help you rest easy! When you bring your pillows and pillowcases to us, we clean, fluff, and sanitize them using the highest quality products. We’ll even deodorize feather pillows and replace the cover on them. Our washing machines are built to handle bulky items like fluffy pillows, so every inch of this cozy sleep essential is spotless. Our customers don’t lose sleep at night, knowing that when they come to us, their pillows will be free of oils, dust, and bacteria. Our recent customer, Mary, said that after using our service, she felt like she left with brand-new items. “Janet Davis cleaned and restored eight down pillows with new ticking and more feathers,” she said. “I feel like I have perfect, new pillows!” Ready to sleep like a baby this year? Contact Janet Davis Cleaners today to set up an appointment. We’ll expertly clean and restore your pillows and pillowcases so they feel brand-new. Leave the fluffing to us, and you’ll be on your way to dreamland.

Many of us hit the gym in January to get a fresh start on our health goals and resolutions. But with all the extra workouts come extra piles of exercise clothes in your hamper. Sweat-stained clothes can often lead to the growth of bacteria. So, whether you’re powering through an HIIT routine or gentle yoga flow, keeping your workout gear clean is essential for your health and performance. It’s time to flex your laundry muscles and give workout clothes a fresh start with these cleaning tips! DON’T SKIMP ON SOAP One of the biggest culprits of stinky workout clothes is bacteria grown from sweat and body oils. When you wash these items in the machine, use a decent amount of soap. A good rule of thumb is that you want a couple of bubbles to show up when washing your clothes. Another reason your gym gear may smell is that you’re not rinsing the soap all the way out during the wash. You can run these clothes through an additional rinse cycle to ensure the soap is gone and odors don’t sink into the garments.

tablespoon of oxygen bleach, like OxiClean or sodium percarbonate. This form of bleach is very mild and typically safe for colors, but you should always read the care label on your clothes before using any bleach, especially for clothes with deep colors that may bleed. Use the warm setting on your washer to help activate the detergent and oxygen bleach. AIR DRY RIGHT AWAY When you’ve finished your workout, instead of throwing your clothes in your gym bag, try leaving them out to air dry. Allowing your gear to ventilate right away will help prevent odors from sweat and oils from sinking in. Try to find a place to hang them with direct sunlight to help keep the fabrics fresh. You should also air dry your gear after washing it, as the dryer’s high heat can degrade certain fabrics commonly found in exercise clothes.
