Striking Stories of God’s Workings GATHERED THIS MONTH FROM BIOLA WORKERS

Winifred M. Rouzee—Soul-Winner B y R ev . J ohn H. H unter f OULD I see the Business Manager?” inquired a Jew .in middle life or older, at the information desk o f the Bible Institute of Los Angeles, one w morning, ten or more years ago. When introduced to the Business Manager the Jew said that he was in the" furniture busi ness, that he had just bought at auction a lot of stuff sold by a storage warehouse for charges, and upon getting his purchases home he had found among them a large oil painting of Jesus. He had said to himself that he knew one place in Los Angeles where they would be glad to get that picture, and he had brought it on his wagon which was waiting outside, and he wanted to give it to the Bible Institute. From the artist’s viewpoint the picture would not rank very highly: It seemed to be an attempted copy o f the risen Christ from one o f the masterpieces. The prints o f the nails in His hands and feet, the marks o f the thorns on His brow, and the great wound in His side are shown. What could the Business Manager (M r. J. P. Welles) do other than graciously accept the gift of the Jew, taking opportunity, o f course, to tell him the story o f the ONE who had come to be the Messiah of the Jew and the Saviour of the world. The next problem was to find a place to hang the pic ture., The most suitable place ,seemed to be the Lyceum Club Room, where every Tuesday evening from one hun dred and fifty to two hundred young business women meet for fellowship supper followed by a real, live Gospel mes sage and Bible study. There the picture hung fo r several months. And then— the city was visited with an epidemic of influenza. By order of the Board of Health all gather ings o f outside students and friends were suspended. O f course the Tuesday evening Lyceum Club meeting had to be given up. Feeling that some of the young ladies would not hear of the change of program, and would be disappointed, and doubly so if n o ;one was there to explain the situation, Miss Winifred Rouzee, then in charge o f the work, de cided to remain in the club room for such an emergency, Two young ladies entered. One had visited the club some weeks before and this evening had brought her friend with her. Hearing that there was to be no meeting, she exclaimed, “ Oh, I am so sorry. I told my friend what a good time I had had, and tonight I have brought her with me.” Miss Rouzee told them how sorry she was for their disappointment, and suggested that perhaps her friend might look around the rooms and see a bit of how the club work is carried on. Both young ladies were glad to do this, and while pass ing from one roorp to ithe other, their attention was ar rested by a large oil painting of Jesus. The stranger sud denly stopped and exclaimed, “ Why, who is that?” Much amazed, Miss Rouzee asked, “ Do you not know who He is?” The other assured her that she did not know. “ Will you sit down and let me tell you about Him?” was the glad response of this devoted soul-winner.

She placed three chairs side by side facing thé picture of the Saviour with His wounded hands and feet and side. And then in her sweet way she told the story of the Christ of Calvary, and urged upon the young lady the importance of accepting Him as her Saviour and surrendering her life to Him as her Lord and Master. In a few moments, so few that Miss Rouzee marveled, the young lady Said that she would accept Him, and kneeling down, she definitely committed herself to Him. Upon rising to her feet, with tears running down her cheeks, yet with shining eyes, she turned to the friend who had brought her and calling her by name, cried, “ Oh, ------— , it is so wonderful; I never knew what it would be to be saved. Will you not accept Him too?” The newborn soul had instantly become a soul-winner. And her friend a little later knelt' with her and Miss Rouzee, and accepted Christ as her Saviour, sur rendering herself to Him. How true that “ God moves in a mysterious way, His wonders to perform.” Is it not a divine mosaic, every incident of this story fitting perfectly into an infinite plan —a picture, sold for charges by a storage warehouse, pre sented to the Institute by a Jewish dealer, hung in the club
