Mountains In History

Roots "P 17 ru its — Christianity— true Christianity B-roots in a' creed and fruits in a character. .He is not a Chris tian who holds tenaciously to each and every one of the thirty- nine points o f the Westminster Confession, or adopts even the ninety-seven theses of Martin Luther, but who, in spite of his orthodoxy in creed, is heterodox and bestial in conduct. The man)who combines an un shaken faith in the authority and integrity of the Bible with an aggressive uprightness in con duct, is the man who approaches, in some human measure, the perfect copy in the Christ life, for in Ills words the most watchful enemies were unable to catch Him, and against His works no worthy objection was ever urged. The real proofs of fundamentalism are n o t in words but in deeds!

Ararat — God’s Despair. And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat (Gen. 8:4 ). Sinai—God’s Disappointing Experiment. And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my L ord: Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, . . . and' I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take, me, and I die: Behold now, this city is near to flee unto . . . Oh, let me escape thither . . . and my soul shall live (Gen. 19:18-20). Calvary—God’s Dire Extremity. Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias (Matt. 27:47). Olivet—God’s Delight. And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is be fore Jerusalem on the east, and the mount o f Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and to ward' the west, and there shall be a very great valley . . . (Zech. 14:4). (I am indebted to D. M. Panton for the major part of this outline. )3G eorg e E. Hall. —°— New Testament Mysteries The Mystery o f Godliness Christ Personally: And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness,: God was mani fest in, the flesh, .justified in the Spirit, seen o f angels, prfeached unto' the Gen tiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory (1 Tim. 3 :16). The Mystery Kept Secret The Truth Revealed: Now to him that is of power .to stablish you according to. my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began (Rom. 16:25). . The Mystery of the Faith The Truth Held Fast: Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience; (1 Tim. 3:9 ). The Mystery of Christ Christ and the Church : For this cause .shall a man leave hiijR father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church (Eph. 5:31-32). The Mystery of Union ■ Jew and Gentile One : How that by revelation he made knowfi unto me the mystery (Eph. 3:3 ). The Mystery o f Lawlessness . Satan’s Counterfeits: For the mystery of iniquity doth al ready w ork : only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out o f the way (2 Thess. 2:7 R. V.J.

“Heaven and earth shall pass away, but My words shall not pass away” (Mark 13:31). Perhaps this was our Lord’s superlative word concerning His teaching. A state ment more definite and plain it would be impossible to frame. Whereas the claim had undoubted reference to the whole of His teaching, it is important that we should remember that He uttered it in connection with His apocalyptic proph ecies, It has been the fashion of certain thinkers to discredit the validity of these sayings of Jesus. .First it was suggested that the records were not authentic. That view has been largely abandoned: and now it is suggested that He was mistaken in accepting the views of His age. Yet, according to this, word, it was in con nection with these very things that He made this supreme claim. It is well to remember this today. How ever difficult it may be to come to perfect agreement in the interpretation o f these Olivet discourses in detail, it is unques tionable that their general ideas are far more in harmony with the world-condi tions in the midst o f which we are living, than are the views which have been ad vanced as to the course o f things pro ceeding gradually, and without upheaval, to the establishment o f an order of peace and goodwill among men. This claim is being vindicated in our own times. It is evident that He understood the human heart better than the modern teachers, who have thought Him mistaken. W e; may still rest assured that the march of history will vindicate Him at every point, and in that assurance we shall find our safety and our jo y in believing Him and obeying Him. * ----------------------------------------------------------- 'f READY BIBLE OUTLINES * ------------------------------------- --------------- 4 Precious Things Precious Blood. Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold', from your vain con versation 1 received by tradition from your fathers; but with the precious blood o f Christ, as of a lamb without, blemish and without spot (1 Pet. 1 :18, 19). Precious Stones. To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed o f men, but chosen of God, and precious, Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual

house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. Wherefore also it is con tained in the Script, tjre,,. Behojd, I lay in Sion a chief corner' stone, elect, precious . . . . (1 Pet. 2:4-6). Precious Faith. Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have ob tained like precious faith with us through the righteousness» of God' and our Saviour Jesus Christ (2 Pet. 1:1). Precious Promises. Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises; that by these ye might be partakers of the di vine nature, having escaped the cor ruption that is. in the world through lust (2 Pet. 1 :4). Precious Death. Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace (Psa. 37:37). Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints (Psa. 116:15). —o— His Witnesses (Acts 1:8) By what we say. For it is' not ye that 7 speak, but the Spirit o f your father which speaketh in

you. Matt. 10:20, By what we do.

And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giv ing thanks to God and the Father by him. Col. 3:17.
