around Edinburgh. They came to the old home of John Knox. “Who was he?” in quired the tourist. “Man, did you never read your Bible?” came the reply. Many a church member is fully as ignorant of the contents o f the Book o f books. . It was a pleasant oasis for Paul and Silas, for “many of them believed” (v. 12). But they were not long permitted to have such a receptive congregation. Their Thessalonian enemies soon put in an appearance and started up their propa ganda. The'modern evangelist may read here his own experiences. The devil’s agents do little sleeping. Let us not abandon our work because o f its ob stacles, but keep up our testimony to the last, realizing that the arch-enemy of souls is the prime mover against the Gos pel. Let us learn from Paul and Silas to take no backward looks. Keep pressing forward. Believe in permanent results, no matter what the present reception may be. Go on sowing the seed, though it be on a battlefield. God will take care o f it. It shall spring up and bring forth fruit for the support of those who come after us. —o—- S eed T houghts We need not only ministers like Paul but hearers like the Bereans. “ The man o f one book is always for midable, but when that one Book is the Bible, he is irresistible.”— Taylor. We need never lack for sermon ma terial (v. 2 ). A real convert will attach himself to some company o f believers (v. 4). Whether liberal or lewd, the enemies of the cross belong together (v. S). Sin turns men upside down; The Gospel has power to set them right side up (v. 6 ). When self is up, God is down. When flesh is up, spirit is down. When time is up, eternity is down. No intelligent enemy o f the Gospel will say that Christianity is a mere bubble (v. Go through your Bible (v. 11) in order that it may go through YOU. (Psa. 139: 23-24). — o— M ethods of B ible S tudy V erse 11 1. Received Bible as Word o f God (cf. 1 Thess. 2:13). 2. Studied Bible by itself, not what others thought about it. 3. Examined Bible carefully—not su perficial reading. 4. Studied Bible systematically and reg ularly. . 5. Studied Bible with a purpose—to find the truth so they might test what they heard.

A great key to getting a true Bible knowledge is found in the seven prayers o f the Psalmist for understanding o f the Word o f God in Psa. 119. 1. For revelation o f its great treasures —v. 18. 2. For discovering topics of conversa tion—v. 27. 3. For light upon life’s pathway—v. 33. 4. For a finding of a right basis o f ser vice—v. 34. 5. For a kindling of true adoration—v. 38. 6 . For supplying . a true education—v. 125. 7. For a basis o f prayer—v. 169.

The results o f the Berean method o f Bible study will be as- follow s: 1. Peace in proportion to meditation— Psa. 119:165. 2. Prayer inspired—Jn. 15:7. 3. Purity through its searching—Jn. 15:3. 4. Power , in witnessing—Mk. 16:20. 5. Praise to God—-Psa. 119:14. 6 . Perception of.spiritual things—Psa. 119:18. 7. Progress through continuous study —*'■ Lk. 4:32. -r-O— G olden T ext I llustration The entrance o f thy Word giveth light (Psa. 119:130). A pastor tells how one day he asked one of the members o f his church how she was getting along in her Christian life. “ Very poorly,” she replied. “My life is a disgrace, to me, to the church and to Christ. I don’t understand why it is.” “How often do you let in the light of God’s W ord?” she was asked.? ' “ Oh, I study it occasionally—when I have time,” she replied. A little baby was lying in a carriage near by and the pastor said: “ I suppose you feed that baby whenever you happen to have time—once in two hours today and once in six hours tomorrow, skip a whole day once in a while—just as you happen to feel!” “ Certainly not,” she answered, “the child would die under such treatment.” Then suddenly she saw the point o f the pastor’s remark. — o — Paul Finds New Friends and Foes Acts 17:1-15; Rom. 15:18-20; 1 Thess. 5 :12-23.
