THE SPECTATOR

July 2018

A Word on Freedom and Independence

The Fourth of July is one of those holidays that really brings people together. We all gather at parks, stadiums, and around our communities to enjoy barbecues and take in the fireworks, or “the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air.” We watch in awe at this spectacular show of lights, celebrating our country and our independence as a nation. independence is important to all of us here at Synergy Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine. It’s something we believe in as patriotic citizens and as caregivers, as well as business owners. When we first opened our doors, we wanted to give our community a new choice in care. We realized that people weren’t getting the care they deserved, or they had to go miles out of their way to find the level of care they needed. We wanted to change that. Independence is all about freedom. We know a lot of our patients value their freedom. They want to do the things they love without worrying about aches, pains, balance, or other mobility issues. It’s 2018 — why can’t you have freedom from pain? Since day one, we’ve dedicated ourselves to finding the solutions to live a better life, or for some folks, a Much as independence is an important part of our nation, the idea of

normal life. If your pain is beyond the scope of what we can treat, we’re going to point you in the right direction. You’ll never leave Synergy without a next step, whether that’s a therapy plan or the name of someone who can help. At the end of the day, all we want is to help you achieve the freedom of a pain-free life. We fight for that. Like so many other business owners before us, we wanted to fix a broken system — or at least give it our all. We wanted to make care easy and accessible. While we have a long way to go in the grand scheme of things, I’m proud of the work we’ve done these past five and a half years. And I think our many patients would agree! As an independent clinic, we have the freedom to provide service that hospitals and franchised health care clinics cannot touch. So many of these places are about quantity over quality. That should never be the case when it comes to health care. You’re never a number at Synergy. When you step through our doors, you’re here to get real care, as long as it takes. We’re not going to see you for five minutes and

push you back out the door. You matter here. We take every patient and every relationship to heart. As you and your family reflect on freedom and independence this month, we hope you have a fun — and safe — Fourth of July, with plenty of food, fireworks, family, and friends. We’ll see you soon!

STAY ACCOUNTABLE WITH THE BUDDY SYSTEM 3 Reasons to Work Out With a Friend

Stay Accountable The most valuable reason to have a workout buddy is accountability. Just having a dedicated person to ask you if you’ve met your fitness goals can have a significant impact on how regularly you exercise. In fact, something as simple as a bimonthly check-in has been shown to help people increase the amount of time they spend working out. A Stanford University study on the impact of social support on physical activity found that an occasional check-in boosted test subjects’ workout times by an average of 78 percent. This is part of a growing body of research that suggests positive social support may be a key factor in motivation. Even if you can’t actually exercise alongside your workout buddy, just checking in on one another’s goals can make a huge difference.

By working out with someone else, you can spot one another and keep an eye out for lapses in form. You and your partner can keep each other honest, ensuring your routine stays safe and effective. Get a Little Competitive Whether you make your workouts explicitly competitive or not, working out with someone is a great way to subconsciously push yourself to improve. Even if your partner is stronger, faster, or in better shape than you, the drive to close the gap between your capabilities can be a big motivating factor. Psychologists call this mental push to avoid being the weak link the “Köhler effect.” In small groups, those who begin weaker often push themselves to improve the most. Why not put this psychological phenomenon to work for you?

W hen you work out alone, it can be tempting to cut corners and get comfortable. After all, if you cheat on a pullup or don’t swing that kettlebell as high as you should, who will know? That’s where a workout buddy comes in. Here are three ways hitting the gym with a friend can make your workouts safer and more effective — and a lot more fun! Ensure Proper Form When you don’t perform an exercise correctly, you may not even be working the right muscles, which makes all of your hard work pointless. At best, you’ll cheat yourself out of the full benefits of your workout. At worst, you risk injury.

HOW TO KNOW IF YOU ARE AT RISK FOR A FALL Assessing Your Risk

Many people are at-risk for a fall and don’t realize it. Balance issues can creep up on you with little warning, but many people find themselves adapting their lifestyles around a fear of falling. Here are a few questions to ask if you find yourself changing your own lifestyle:

Do you avoid driving or keep it to a minimum?

system in your inner ear. It gives you a sense of balance and spatial orientation, allowing you to move and maintain your balance.

Have you started to say no to once- favorite social activities?

Are you noticing changes to your vision or hearing (or both)?

Do you experience dizziness or a lack of confidence in moving?

Are you experiencing any loss of sensation or numbness in your arms, legs, or other parts of the body?

Normal balance requires the integration of three sensory systems: visual, vestibular, and somatosensory (sensations from the skin, muscles, tendons, and joints), as well as muscle strength. When one or more of these systems are not functioning well, you may experience episodes of spinning, lightheadedness, trouble focusing your eyes, and/or poor balance and falls. If you’re concerned about your fall risk, don’t hesitate to contact us. We can’t help you if you don’t say anything. At Synergy, we’re all about helping you take that next step.

Are you unable to sleep in a bed or afraid to roll over while in bed?

Do you rely on a cane or walker when you walk?

Do you prefer sleeping in an easy chair or recliner?

Do you have the feeling of spinning or falling when moving?

Are you afraid to stand when getting out of your bed or recliner?

Have you ever experienced a fall in recent memory?

Do you worry about getting into the shower?

Where Do Essential Oils Come From?

Where Essential Oils Come From Sourcing the Sweet-Smelling Stuff

Call it a pseudoscientific fad or a medical revolution; either way, essential oils are more popular today than they have ever been. Though research on the efficacy of lavender, ginger, and the dozens of other sweet-smelling oils is conflicting at best, people are using them at an astonishing rate. In fact, according to Stratistics MRC, essential oils were a $5.91 billion industry in 2016 and are expected to reach $12.85 billion by 2023. Whether you’re an essential oil acolyte or you fly into a rage at the faintest hint of bergamot, your mind is probably already made up about aromatherapy. The question remains, though: Where does all this delicious-smelling stuff come from?

after harvest, the plants are placed on a mesh inside a sealed still, into which steam is injected. As the steam rises and envelops the plant, it breaks it down and lifts its constituent components up through a tube and into a condenser. The condenser cools the resulting vapor and collects it in liquid form at the bottom. Since essential oils do not mix with water, they float on the surface, where they’re siphoned off, bottled, and shipped off to a distributor. There are other methods, such as expression (aka cold pressing), but because steam distillation is so easy to do, most essential oils you see on the shelf will have gone through this process. Lavender essential oil is harvested from sheaves of lavandula angustifolia , that purple herb you see all over gardens across the United States. There are

lavender farms all over the world, from California to Japan to Brazil, but the biggest world producer of lavender is, interestingly, Bulgaria. Tea Tree oil comes from the leaves of melaleuca alternifolia , commonly known as narrow-leaved paperbark, a short, bushy tree that produces white, fluffy flowers in the spring. The trees are endemic to Australia, but today are usually farmed in New South Wales or Queensland. Bergamot is distilled from the peels of lime-green bergamot oranges, or citrus bergamia . Most of it comes from coastal areas around the Ionian Sea. Whatever you do with it, use it sparingly on your skin — it can amplify skin damage from the sun!

Most essential oils are derived from a process called steam distillation . Soon
