HOW TO KNOW IF YOU ARE AT RISK FOR A FALL Assessing Your Risk

Many people are at-risk for a fall and don’t realize it. Balance issues can creep up on you with little warning, but many people find themselves adapting their lifestyles around a fear of falling. Here are a few questions to ask if you find yourself changing your own lifestyle:

Do you avoid driving or keep it to a minimum?

Are you noticing changes to your vision or hearing (or both)?

Do you experience dizziness or a lack of confidence in moving?

Normal balance requires the integration of three sensory systems: visual, vestibular, and somatosensory (sensations from the skin, muscles, tendons, and joints), as well as muscle strength. When one or more of these systems are not functioning well, you may experience episodes of spinning, lightheadedness, trouble focusing your eyes, and/or poor balance and falls. Ingredients

8 cups seedless watermelon, cut into 1-inch cubes

1 pinch of cayenne pepper 1/2 cup mint leaves, torn

1/4 cup fresh lime juice

Salt to taste

Instructions

1. In a large mixing or salad bowl, toss watermelon with lime juice and cayenne pepper.

2. Gently fold in mint leaves. 3. Sprinkle with salt and serve.
