Welcome to Issue 7 of the Carnaby and Soho Magazine. We began work on this edition of the magazine a few months ago and we are sharing it online so you can plan what you might do when we get back to fun times in Carnaby and Soho. Carnaby and Soho have long been known as the epicentre of youth culture at the heart of the West End, and will continue to be celebrated when London opens its doors again, and its bustling self resumes. It is only when something is taken away that you realise how much you loved it. We are sociable by nature and that’s why we love shopping, dining and hanging out together. This issue includes a guide to the best shopping and dining, with everything from eco-friendly fashion and must-visit shops for the new season, to vegan hotspots and brilliant mocktails. We hope you enjoy reading the magazine at home and it inspires you to continue to support our wonderful shops and restaurants – both the independents and household names. You can still find your favourite Carnaby and Soho brands online and you can stay connected to our social media platforms to read updates, news and ideas from the community to keep you busy. If you haven ‘ t already, you can sign up for the free newsletters too. We hope you enjoy the issue and look forward to welcoming you back in the near future. We are passionate about bringing Sri Lankan home cooking to London – celebrating the flavours and dishes we grew up with and evoking a sense of the island from the minute you step into the restaurant. What dish would you recommend for our readers? The Chatti Roast is not only our favourite but that of our diners. Also, give string hoppers a go – they’re rice flour noodles, the perfect lighter alternative to rice and brilliant with nearly all curries.

Ganni is not one uniform persona or gender – it’s Ganni girls, plural – everyone is welcome. Ganni girls march to the beat of their own drum. They’re the people we meet who inspire us with their kick-ass energy and way of being. What do you love about Carnaby? We love having so many fab restaurants on our doorstep, Pastaio being a firm favourite. What’s on the Ganni playlist? David Bowie, Robyn, Fleetwood Mac, Lykke Li and Diana Ross. –– Folie 37 GOLDEN SQUARE Describe Folie in three words. Generosity, revelry and elegance. What is your best-selling dish? THE #GANNIGIRLS ARE COMING THE #GANNIGIRLS ARE COMING THE #GANNIGIRLS ARE COMING THE #GANNIGIRLS ARE COMING THE #GANNIGIRLS ARE COMING THE #GANNIGIRLS ARE COMING Once an insider secret and now a global phenomenon, viral fashion label Ganni is a masterclass in Copenhagen cool – and you can find it on Carnaby’s Beak Street. The beauty of Ganni is that it has arrived in the capital from Denmark with a big-collared bang, a defiant stomp of some oversized bovver boots, and completely recalibrated the way London girls dress in just a matter of seasons. THE #GANNIGIRLS ARE COMING THE #GANNIGIRLS ARE COMING
Bosworth and Helena Christensen (who turned up for drinks with Reffstrup wearing the same Ganni coat) came up with the #Gannigirls hashtag, and Reffstrup is right about the egalitarian appeal of the brand. “I love Ganni because it’s effortless,” says Laura Jackson, broadcaster, founder of Hoste and huge fan of the brand. “The colours and shapes are inspiring, and I’ve never felt awkward in anything Ganni. I’ve been wearing it for years and I treasure every single piece.” Great, timeless design, be it Arne Jacobsen furniture or Bang & Olufsen stereos, is imprinted in the Danish DNA. This 11-year-old fashion label has a canny knack of nailing fun, ‘just thrown together’ cool pieces, which wear as though they
Ditte Reffstrup
From its spirited giant ruff collar blouses to its large-check trousers, via its viral hashtag #Gannigirls, which has been adopted by a coterie of influencer fans, the cult label has managed to convert a cabal of stylish women into apostles of a new fashion movement. “The Ganni girl isn’t one polished persona,” says Ganni’s Creative Director, Ditte Reffstrup. “Firstly, it’s Ganni girls, plural – everyone is welcome. It’s a mindset or attitude more than a sense of style. It’s about confidence and having fun, with something unexpected you can’t quite put your finger on.”
predictable; these Danish women wear big boots with pretty dresses rather than heels. There’s nothing uncomfortable or challenging about Ganni’s vision for your wardrobe, and music, travel and books are just as likely to inspire a collection as fashion trends are. “People-watching gets me going,” she admits. “But I always go with my gut feeling and what I am drawn to.” It was Reffstrup’s instinctive and nostalgic love for London that led Ganni to open in Carnaby in summer 2019. “Opening a Ganni store in London is a dream come true,” says Reffstrup. “It’s a city that has always had my heart – I’ve been coming here for inspiration since I was a teenager. It was my first ‘big city’, experience. Coming from a small town in northern Denmark, my whole world cracked open.” Prepare to be Gannified.
could be vintage, they could be from the most ancient depths of your floordrobe, they could be your mum’s or they could be brand new. A Ganni collection is an eclectic mash-up of contemporary fashion design delivered at decent prices. “We’re lucky to sit alongside luxury brands but offer an honest price point,” says Reffstrup. It’s the Danish girls cycling around the city and the unique twist they put on their outfits that are a catalyst for Reffstrup’s creativity. It’s a look that is often counter-intuitive, never

VEGAN EATS FIVE MINUTES WITH CLUB MEXICANA From tacos and burritos to loaded nachos, the list of delicious Mexican food goes on and on. Now picture this: 100% vegan Mexican street food. A stroke of genius on the food scene, Club Mexicana has completely revolutionised the face of Mexican cuisine, offering favourites such as the Cheezeburger taco, ‘chorizo’ and sweet potato burrito and Mexican fried chick’n – all vegan, of course. We speak to Meriel Armitage, the founder (and genius) behind Club Mexicana, Kingly Court’s latest opening.
WHETHER YOU’RE A VEGAN, VEGGIE OR FLEXI, THE AREA IS BRIMMING WITH DELICIOUS MEAT-FREE OPTIONS, PROVING THAT VEGAN ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT MEAN BORING. HERE ARE OUR TOP PICKS.
WHAT ARE THE MUST-HAVE DISHES ON THE MENU FOR CLUB MEXICANA FIRST-TIMERS? The To’fish taco, the Cheezeburger taco or the Mexican fried chick’n (MFC). WHERE DID YOU GET THE IDEA FOR VEGAN MEXICAN STREET FOOD? I was inspired by my travels in Mexico and street food traders in California, who were doing amazing things with bold flavours, and I wanted to bring that vibe to London. I think that perceptions of veganism can be that it is quite bland, but Club Mexicana is about showing that vegan food can be punchy and delicious. CAN YOU GIVE US SOME INSIGHT INTO FUTURE VEGAN TRENDS? I feel like the ‘trends’ have been and gone; we’re in phase two now! Veganism has gone mainstream. No more trends, just a huge variety of options at every level.

NEWBURGH QUARTER NEWBURGH QUARTER NEWBURGH QUARTER NEWBURGH QUARTER NEWBURGH QUARTER NEWBURGH QUARTER NEWBURGH QUARTER Hi! My name’s Anthony, and I'm a London-based content creator and menswear enthusiast. SCAN FOR MORE Carnaby.co.uk/Magazine I’m big into my clothing and brands, not so much what makes them ‘fashion’ but more so what makes them quality, functional and, most of all, comfortable. I’m here to talk you guys through a couple of my favourite stops in the Newburgh Quarter, a small haven of high-quality, independent and heritage brands. @anthonyylee_
–– Barbour

29 FOUBERT’S PLACE Let’s start with a classic, a brand that boasts true British heritage. Barbour is one of those brands that deserve a slot in your wardrobe for life, with waxed cotton jackets that are smart, timeless and, most of all, super functional. Not to mention, they also do some amazing collaborations with brands such as Engineered Garments and END. – need I say more? –– RÆBURN 3 NEWBURGH STREET One of the newest additions to the Newburgh Quarter, RÆBURN brings a breath of fresh air to the street. Its clean white shopfront and innovative designs will catch your eye from a mile off. Inside you’ll find garments and accessories made from recycled military equipment, such as parachutes, along with experimental dyeing techniques for some really interesting finishes. With recycling and sustainability at its heart, I cannot recommend this brand enough as one to visit. –– Levi’s Vintage Clothing 5 NEWBURGH STREET For denim-lovers, LVC is a must. A small off-branch from the mainline Levi’s brand, LVC is a premium investment. With styles dating back past the 1950s and some of the highest-quality denim on the high street, a pair of jeans from these guys will cover you for years to come.
–– Cubitts
37 MARSHALL STREET I’m unfortunately cursed with some seriously poor eyesight, and for those in a similar predicament, Cubitts is the answer. They’ve got everything right from the eye tests downstairs to their extensive collection of high-quality frames upstairs. These frames will define your face, a worthy investment if done right. A personal favourite of mine are the Keystone frames – definitely check them out. –– RedWing Shoes 8 & 17 NEWBURGH STREET Probably one of the most all- American shopfronts you’ll find in London, Red Wing Shoes has two stores in the Newburgh Quarter, for men and for women. These guys know what they’re doing when it comes to boots, so if you’re after a pair that has the potential to outlive you, then you’re in the right spot. With deconstructed boots on almost every shelf, you can really appreciate the craftsmanship that Red Wing have honed over the years. –– These are my top five; however if you’re after more, be sure to check out The Great Frog for rock ’n’ roll rings and accessories, MÜHLE for a premium pamper or shave, Antidote for an extensive collection of natural wines and Ugly Dumpling for one of the best blends of Asian and European cuisine. Some seriously addictive stuff and, best of all, pretty much all dog-friendly! With all that in mind, hopefully you’ll discover something new (or old!) in the Newburgh Quarter.

It all started with a simple question: what’s your size? Who knew back then that they had the makings of a streetwear institution that would become a trendsetter for years to come? Twenty years, to be precise. Arriving on Carnaby Street in the year 2000, the size? store has boasted exclusive releases and collaborations and been the sole purveyors of the most lusted- after limited-edition footwear and streetwear. It’s the brand’s collaborations, however, that are the beating heart of this iconic label. Over the years, the Carnaby store has seen everything from bespoke shopping experiences with fashion behemoths PUMA, Carhartt WIP and premium shoe cleaners Jason Markk (now with its own permanent space on the first floor) to the launch of size? sessions in 2017, the live music series which saw artists such as Jay Rock, Miraa May and Yxng Bane take over the store with intimate gigs. Plus, in 2005, expressionist painter Dave White celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Air Max 95 by recreating his studio in the store, complete with paint-splattered floor and live painting. Twenty years have passed and, yet, the original charm of the brand still holds strong. So how are they marking the milestone?
size? says: “We have a vast array of collaborative projects landing over the next few months, including one super sought-after style with Nike, celebrating 20 moments over the last 20 years on one shoe, one of Nike’s most iconic shoes – the Air Max 95.” “Also, alongside our own 20th anniversary, adidas Originals is celebrating 50 years of its iconic Superstar style, and size? has done a special 50/20 joint anniversary pack.” There’s also a continuation of the iconic Anniversary City Series with adidas Originals. Plus, size? has reimagined its favourite classic models from Reebok – one to keep firmly on your radar. Reflecting on what makes the Carnaby Street store so special, Luke says: “The beauty is it has something different for everybody, from our collaboration pack with Vans, celebrating three generations of punk music, to the release of the adidas Originals SL 76 running shoes from the archives – an exclusive to us this year. Vintage adidas and Nike running styles from the ’70s and ’80s are also massive for us at the minute.” It’s not just footwear – downstairs you’ll find big-name brands Patagonia, HUF, Dickies, Tommy Jeans and streetwear kings Stüssy. We can’t wait to see what the next 20 years holds.

I can’t name any other area in the world that’s its equal.”
everything in between – London’s Soho can safely stake its claim to own streetwear. “English music and subcultures have always been a huge source of inspiration for us,” says Karl Oskar-Olsen, Creative Director and co-founder of recently opened Danish concept store Wood Wood. “We felt that Soho was home to some of the best and most intriguing retail spaces and so was a perfect fit for our flagship store.” “If you work here you get to see the real Soho, and every day is different,” says Stephen Ward, General Manager at The Collection. “The characters – there are a lot of regular faces in the area with unique and interesting stories. The last few years have been massive for streetwear here, but we don’t put ourselves in a box when it comes to brands or items we stock. We sell streetwear, sneakers, artwork – anything people want to collect – at a range of prices from £2 to £20,000.”

So what’s worth collecting right now? Highlights include Supreme’s fake fur varsity jackets, Tupac Shakur print tees and dollar bill hoodies, Vans’ classic chequerboard vegan canvas slip-ons and Billionaire Boys Club’s Space Check shorts, tees and bowling shirts. Looking for on-the- go storage solutions? Try and bag one of Palace’s oversized jackets or cargo pants weighed down with 3D pockets if you can. For a hit of colour head to M.C.Overalls for brilliant unisex basics in a rainbow of shades, PUMA for primary-coloured PUMA x SONIC RS-X 3 trainers, adidas Originals for three-stripe classic Gazelles and retro tracksuits in a multitude of shades. Don’t forget The North Face for hi-tech separates in colour-coordinated brights. Whatever your style, there is a world of innovative streetwear to choose from in Soho’s square mile. “Streetwear has shifted the entire fashion landscape,” says Axel Arigato’s Albin Johansson, “and there is no going back.”
So when it came to finding the perfect spot for Axel Arigato’s first UK store back in 2016, Broadwick Street was a no-brainer. And what’s more, the forward-thinking brand would join a stellar line-up of international brands making Soho the global destination for streetwear. With its ever-changing mix of cultures and creatives, Soho has always been the natural home of street style. From the Italian coffee house and art scene of the ’50s to Swinging London in the ’60s and every style tribe that followed, the area has an iconic history to draw on, making it even more appealing for so many street style brands. Home to big-name brands such as Supreme, Vans, The North Face, Billionaire Boys Club, PUMA and adidas Originals as well as home-grown street style players such as Palace, reimagined workwear labels like M.C.Overalls and multi-brand destinations such as Wood Wood, The Collection and END. – selling an A to Z of labels from Y-3 and A Bathing Ape to Fear of God, Off-White, Stüssy and

ADMIRE THE LOCAL STREET ART Have you spotted the Spirit of Soho mural on Broadwick Street? The art piece was created in 1991 by the Soho community in celebration of the area’s most famous characters and venues. When the clock strikes on the hour, the mural comes to life with a cheeky wink from opera singer Teresa Cornelys to her former lover Casanova, who blows her a kiss back!
NEWBURGH QUARTER Escape the madding crowds and hit the cobbled streets of the Newburgh Quarter for a host of premium brands offering cutting-edge fashion and first-rate lifestyle, grooming and dining options.
MORNING STROLL Grab a coffee and catch some early sun on a morning stroll through Carnaby’s Kingly Court.
DINE AT THE CHEF’S TABLE
BE A SWEATY BETTY The ultimate millennial destination – discover three floors of fashion, fitness, food and beauty under one roof at No. 1 Carnaby.

WOOF WOOF You’re spoilt for choice with Insta-worthy backdrops for your furry, four-legged friends – bound to set tails wagging.
PERFECT PASTA Pastaio’s delicious vegan range is guilt-free goodness at its finest – also with gluten-free options available. Our favourite? It has to be the wild mushroom tagliatelle.
BRIGHT LIGHTS OF SOHO
