T he Smooth Fox Terrier Association was founded in Great Britain in 1932 for the protection and interest of Smooth Fox Terriers. It was founded on the strength of 268 recognised breeders of the time and some of the famous kennels and names of the last century formed the original committee; Rev Rosslyn Bruce (Secretary & Treasurer), C.H Bishop (Solus), Mrs Blake (Watteau) and Mrs Miller (Boreham) to name but afew. 90 years have passed but the SFTA still retains a strong membership and active promotion of our wonderful breed here in the UK. It also retains a collection of archive memorabilia relating to the breed, many items donated for safekeeping & preservation of our history and showing the original breed type and standard and how little we have moved away from this despite 15 decades passing. In 2018 Mandy Saunders created a facebook page – The Smooth Fox Terrier Association Archive – to start to share the wonderful collection we have with fellow enthusiasts from around the world. The facebook page now has over 2,000 members and our collection can be found in the many articles, photographs, albums and files present on the page. Any donations to the archive collection are shared with members as soon as they can be catalogued and posted hence a constant stream of breed history has been posted over the last 7 years.
The Smooth Fox Terrier Associations first show was held on July 5th 1933 in Oxford and in the collection we have photographs and the Rev Rosslyn Bruce’s marked up show catalogue. The show attracted an entry of 216 dogs judged by Captain Holdsworth and he found his Best in Show as Ch Bowden Rakish and Best Opposite Sex as Ch Flanchford Finella. The images below present a snapshot of the smooth fox terrier show world over 90 years ago and are only available due to the archive’s preservation !
