will seek to be satisfied only with Him. And you will then see the great purpose God has in all this.ffiHe that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.” —E van H. H opkins . JULY 20 Seeing the Best "Go in this thy might . . . have not I sent thee?” (Judg. 6:14). The saddest thing I know in men and women is their readiness to believe the Worst about anybody and everybody. God never looks for the worst, but always for the best. Had we seen Gideon that day, we should have seen nothing but a craven- hearted, terror-stricken farmer, sneaking away to thresh his corn in secret, for fear of robbers. When God saw him, He said: “The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man o f valor.” He sees the hidden possibilities, and chooses us, not for what we are, but for what we may become. —S amuel C hadwick . Teach me to feel another’s woe, To hide the fault I see; That mercy I to others show, That mercy show to me. —A lexander P ope . JULY 21 Learning and Leaning “ The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer” (Psa. 18:2). A day or two ago, I met with Luther’s sweet saying, that the marrow of the gos pel is found in the pronouns meum and nostrum — “my” and “our.” .. . The highest proof that the Bible is of God, and that Christ is a perfect Saviour, is not logical, or historical, above all not literary, but de votional and experimental. While others lean to their own understanding, may our devout souls lean hard upon Him whose Spirit gives us insight into divine truth which none of the princes of this world ever win by mere learning of the schools. —A. T. P ierson . JULY 22 The Secret of Happiness and Success “ Walk in love” (Eph. 5 :2). - “Walk in love” is the order o f the day for the great multitude o f the heavenward going pilgrims; yea, it is one of the “ stand ing orders” for the whole o f the way, right on to the golden gates . . . Walking in love will give us many a sweet foretaste of the joys that shall be ours “ when round His throne we meet.” True, the exercise will he difficult sometimes . . . . There may, indeed, be rough places and dangerous passes and difficult people to be encoun tered in our onward course; but notwith standing, let us “ walk in love.” Our loving Master and Friend will be with us at every step o f the way. He says to us at starting: “I will not fail thee.” Alleluia! . . . . It is the secret o f untold happiness and success: “Walk in love.’® J . T. W. JULY 23 The Power of Christ’s Death and of His Life “ Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn o f wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone : but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit " (John 12:24). There can be no such thing as spiritual progress and development, without the put ting forth of those spiritual forces which

but from them. . . . God neither chose us nor called us because we were holy, but He called us that we might be holy, and holiness is the beauty produced by His workmanship in us. The excellences which we see in a believer are as much the work o f God as the atonement itself. Thus is brought out very sweetly the fullness of the grace of God. —C harles H addon S purgeon . “ Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?” (Gal. 5:7). The fifth chapter of Nehemiah is of great significance to the Christian worker. It warns him that outward difficulties are not, perhaps, the hardest trials he will meet with. The troubles that come from within the circle—the hindrance to obeying the truth in those who did run well, the spring ing up of a root of bitterness to trouble many—these are the heaviest burdens that fall upon leaders in God’s work. . . . But the same grace of a present God, and the same readiness in Him to respond to His servant’s cry, are apparent in dealing with inward as with outward difficulties. He is a God at hand, to meet the need at home, and in the heart; as well as a God far off to defeat the furthest plans of the enemy (Jer. 23:23).— H u b e r t B rooke . JULY 18 I Ought to Be Happy “ The steps o f a good man are ordered by the Lord” (Psa. 37:23). How often we say, “ Itvis 'a disappoint ment!” Yes, even we who profess to be lieve that “all things work together for good to them that love God” ! Disappoint ment is a very dreary word. It speaks o f unrealized hopes and unsatisfied longings. Surely my heavenly Father knows what-is best for His child. . . . Have I ever really given myself, my life, my plans, my future, my heart, yea, my all into God’s hands, to be whatever He shall appoint? If so, when little worries, or even great trials come, I shall look at each as His appointment for me. Ought I not, as a child of God, to be intensely happy?—M ary M arsh . How often we trust each other, And only doubt our Lord. JULY 19 Being Occupied with Christ “ Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power” (Col. 1 :11). Struggling is not a sign of power, but of weakness. It is not by struggling you get strength. Power flows in as a stream; then activity follows as a result—but it is activity without fret and friction and strain. It is the life of the Risen One. Oh, be occupied with Him. . . . If your thoughts are taken up with the process o f sanctifica tion, the work o f the Holy Ghost in you, of course you will he continually feeling your spiritual pulse.. . . But if you see that Christ is your indwelling holiness, and you enshrine Him as such in your heart, you JULY 17 Grace for Every Testing We take the word of mortals, And yet distrust His w ord; But oh, what light and glory Would shine o’er all our days, If we always would remember God means just what He says. —A.
