and long-suffering with joyfulness’’ (Col. 1 : 1 1 ). To try by self-effort to be patient is to attempt an impossible task. Every en deavor along that line will end in dis appointment. But to submit oneself wholly to the “ God of patience,” to fall in ‘ with those divine conditions by which a law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus is brought to bear upon the difficulty, is to find that what self-energy could not do, divine power accomplishes with ease. Here is a privilege that belongs not to a favored few, but to all the redeemed . . . This “patience” is ndt a sullen submission to God’s require ment, for it is added “ with joyfulness.;’” It is a patience which finds an unspeakable delight in doing God’s will.— S elected . JULY 26 Reaching a Higher Level “I am shut up, and I cannot come forth’’ (Psa. 88:8). Look at the vessel passing through a canal lock. It comes in, the gates behind it are shut, and before it are two gates against which is the whole pressure of the water in the canal above. As the ship passes in, and the two gates are shut be hind it, it is shut as into a watery grave! But now, unobserved by any eye, under the water in which the vessel is floating, two sluices are opened, and from the fullness above the water is let in beneath, and the vessel rises higher and higher, till it reaches the top, and then the gates are opened, and it goes forth on the upper level. Beloved fellow believer, this illus trates God’s object in shutting us in. . . . God’s own time for bringing forth His “shut up” ones may not come quickly, but
have their source in Him who has risen from the dead. . . . Identification with Christ on the cross is the only way of knowing what it is to be in union and fel lowship with Him as risen from the dead. W e may learn what the death of Christ means long before we are ready to learn what His risen life can be to us. But we do not get away from the one because we pass on to the other. We need continually the power both of His death, and o f His life.fe-.Ii/tf o f Faith. JULY 24 Meant for Our Good “ When he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold’’ (Job 23:10). If you would abide in Christ, you must recognize that. . . everything that comes in the course of providence is in some sense connected with the will of God. That try ing circumstance was not chance, some thing with which Christ had nothing to do, and which you can only protest against and wonder how God can sit on the throne and let such things be. . . . I do not say that you are to regard everything as the very best thing that you would choose, or the very best thing that God ultimately has for y ou ; but it is allowed either that God may show you His power to overcome it, or else that it may teach you some lesson of holi ness, of trust, of tranquillity, of courage. —A.
