Best Fielder George Ryan

Charlie Goodwin and Dan Metherell, restrictive bowling from Callum Hackston and Monty Hamilton, and spin coming from Jack Burt, Thomas Clarke, Will Patchett and Sam Dickie. Highlights included 4/16 and 4/19, for Monty and Charlie respectively, against Sydenham, Dan taking 3/32 against Darfield and 4/12 against North West, and Charlie, Callum and Sam Dickie each taking three wickets in an innings through various matches. Our only five wicket bag went to Thomas, with 5/40 against St Bede’s. While bowling was consistent throughout the season, our batting improved as the season went on. We had to rely on the lower order of Dan, Jack and Charlie to give us competitive totals in the first few games, with Dan scoring 49 not out against Darfield. Ben Abbot (38, 36 and 32) was more consistent through the middles games and was joined by Thomas (38, 33 and 40), Sam Hadley (30) and Will (38) to give us a key win against St Bede’s. Our batting saved its best for the final match against St Bede’s, with Sam Dickie batting the innings for 70 not out, joined in significant partnerships by Josh Wood (37), Dan (25) and Callum (53 not out), to build a total that we defended with style.

The Colts Black finished 3rd in the two-day competition, behind Colts White and St Bede’s. Nick averaged 40 with the bat, while Ciaran (18 wickets, average 7.11) and Jordan (17 wickets, average 12.00) dominated with the ball. The one-day competition in Term 4 consisted of a double round of matches. The first round began with a win over Sydenham (128/7 off 35 vs 93 all out). Levi Astle top scored with 35. A heavy loss to St Bede’s (69 all out vs 70/1) was followed by a good win over CBHS (197 all out vs 119 all out). Ed Cochran and Nick Gibb (75) put on a century opening partnership in this match, with Ciaran Huntley and Jordan Braithwaite taking seven wickets between them. The match against Colts White saw the opposition bowled out for 54, with Flynn Topham claiming 4/13 and Colts Black achieving a seven wicket win. A narrow 12 run loss to StAC followed, the team unable to chase down the target of 200, with Ciaran claiming four wickets and scoring 43. The second round began with a game against StAC. Colts Black avenged their earlier loss with a seven wicket win (59 all out vs 60/3). Ciaran and Jordan again took seven wickets. Sydenham was bowled out for 105, with Kevin Thiele claiming 3/13 off 10 overs. College struggled to reach the total, but were held together by Ed, who remained unbeaten having opened the innings. Next, St Bede’s. Batting first, Colts Black managed 144, and then a great bowling and fielding effort saw St Bede’s dismissed for 121. An eight wicket win over CBHS (111 all out vs 112/2) meant both College teams went into the last match of the round on equal points, with the winner claiming the one-day title. The game was reduced to 45 overs after a disrupted morning due to rain. Colts White were asked to bat and lost a couple of early wickets before making 166/9 off 45, with Jordan taking 4/28. Ed and George Ryan set up a 64 run opening partnership, before Nick (59 no) saw the team home by four wickets in the 41st over to claim the win.

Year 10 Prize for Bowling Ciaran Huntley

This year a new Colts grade (Year 10) was introduced in the Metro cricket competition and College entered two teams: Colts Black and Colts White. There were six teams in the grade, playing a two-day competition in Term 1 and a one-day competition in Term 4. The season started with a match against College’s Colts White. The Colts Black claimed the first innings points and a 40 run lead, thanks to a very good 53 to Ed Cochran. The Colts White batted much better second time around, however, setting a target of 150, and the game ended in a draw. A comfortable 175 run win against St Andrew’s College came next, thanks to half centuries to Nick Gibb and George Ryan. Ciaran Huntley claimed 5/17 in the first innings, and then Nick bowled a superb spell of off spin to claim 7/26 and bowl StAC out for 90. The game against Sydenham called for grit and determination when the team was behind by 60 runs after the first innings. Jordan Braithwaite claimed 5/36 and Flynn Topham three wickets and in College’s 2nd innings five batsmen scored over 20 runs, setting a target of 160. College bowled well (Ciaran 5/21) and dismissed Sydenham for 120 to claim the win. On the first day of play against St Bede’s College both sides performed well, but rain on the second day saw the match abandoned after St Bede’s made 225 in their first innings and College finished on 70/7 in reply. In their final match of the term, the Colts Black played the Christchurch Boys’ High School development team, dismissing them for 62 in their first innings. In reply College amassed 346/5 declared, with Nick 100 retired, Ed 62, Gabriel Gallaway 55no and George 49. Robbie McClean took three wickets in the second innings to help dismiss CBHS for 97 and record a comfortable win.
