CRICKET COLTS WHITE TEAM Coach: Warren Lidstone Team: Tim Seeto (captain), Josh Beaglehole, Jack Brent, Jack Coles, Hugh Duston, Charlie Eglinton, Hamish Falls-Anderson, Jed Gimblett, Matthew Lewis, Alex Scott, Harry Sharr, Oliver Shore, Jackson Thomas. Also played: Ollie Jones, Alex Stead, Nate Ovendale The goal for the Colts teams was to develop a greater understanding of the game and develop skills. Success should always be measured in these terms. Great improvement was shown throughout Term 1, culminating in an outstanding performance against St Bede’s College in the final two-day game. Term 4 saw the side besieged by injury and the loss of two players on exchange. The learning advancement did not flourish to the previous extent, but a greater game sense emerged. By the end of the year all could be satisfied the Colts White XI had developed skills, improved and knew how to close out games. Even more important was the fact that the boys gelled together, had fun and created a close bond. It was sad when the team realised they may never play together again, as they had developed some great friendships. In terms of performances, Term 1 saw the team win the tight two-day competition, while Term 4 saw both College teams play in the final, with the Colts White finishing as runners-up. In Term 1 they had convincing outright wins against Christchurch Boys’ High School, St Andrew’s College and St Bede’s College, with draws the result of a tense and close game against the Colts Black and a rain interrupted Sydenham fixture. Tim Seeto was critical to the team’s success. A superb captain, he was the glue to many batting efforts, scoring two centuries and two half centuries in his seven bats. Oliver Shore, Hugh Duston and Charlie Eglinton scored other half centuries, while Jack Coles was a

Ciaran (26 wickets, average 8.81) and Jordan (19 wickets, average 7.68) again dominated the bowling stats, while George had a good term in the gloves with nine catches and four stumpings to go with his nine dismissals in Term 1. The season finished with a trip to St Paul’s Collegiate, Hamilton, to participate in the Vettori Shield, an invitational Colts tournament. The travelling team was a selection from both the Colts White and Colts Black sides, and College was in a pool with King’s College, Hutt International Boys’ School and St Paul’s Collegiate. The tournament started with a match against St Paul’s, who were very quickly in trouble at 11/6 and 22/7 and eventually dismissed for 134, with Jordan Braithwaite taking 4/26. The run chase was steady but at 87/6 College needed to dig deep and Nick Gibb (54no) and Ciaran Huntley (19no) saw the team home for a four wicket win. Next, against King’s, College was 151/5 in the 43rd over, before a late collapse saw the team all out for 157. This proved to be enough, however, with King’s succumbing to the trio of spin (Nick taking 3/17, Hamish Falls-Anderson 3/13 and Josh Beaglehole) and bowled out for 91. In the final match of the pool, College bowled first, dismissing HIBS for 108, with Oliver Shore (3/19) and Hamish (3/16) bowling well. In reply, College was 4/50 before Nick (49no) and George Ryan (31no) combined to bring the team home for a place in the final against Wellington College. At 34/3, it appeared bowling first had been the right decision, but a wonderful 170 run partnership saw Wellington make 218/4 off 50. In reply, College was unable to keep up with the required run rate and was eventually bowled out for 113. Nevertheless, the team can be very pleased with the cricket they played over the tournament. It was a great way for the Colts group to finish the 2019 season.

very consistent scorer in the middle order, and Josh Beaglehole and Jed Gimblett were critical contributors lower in the order. In terms of bowling, Hamish Falls-Anderson was both a wicket-taker and miserly in conceding runs, while Alex Scott emerged as a vital penetrative bowler. Charlie, Jed, Oliver, Josh and Matthew Lewis rounded off a well- balanced bowling unit. Poor weather, difficult wickets, injury and team changes meant Term 4 was not as consistent in terms of performances. The high points were two incredible games against St Bede’s. In the first, the Colts White XI battled through to score 103, a score we felt gave us a chance, and at 12/9, after great bowling, College dismissed the opposition for 31. Similarly, in the second fixture, the final wicket partnership of Jed Gimblett and Hamish Falls-Anderson scrapped their way through to the winning score. These highs were contrasted to the low of being dismissed for 53 by the Colts Black in a game all were looking forward to. Half centuries were scored by Jack Brent (2), Hugh Duston, Tim Seeto and Oliver Shore, and Matthew Lewis emerged as a strong, elegant batsman in the making. Oliver took a five- wicket bag, while Hamish and Alex Scott continued to be key bowlers, with Jed, Charlie Eglinton and Josh Beaglehole playing exceptional roles on different days. Harry Sharr took over as captain when Tim headed overseas, and Jackson Thomas thrived in the team and appears to be a promising bowler. The final match of the season pitted the Colts White against the Colts Black. It was a fitting way to conclude as both teams were on the same points, well ahead of any opposition. Matthew, Oliver and Harry put the Colts White in a strong position batting first, but the lower order succumbed with the addition of few runs. The 165 score was competitive, and a good bowling display saw Hamish, Alex and Oliver gain critical wickets. As the game was in the balance chances were missed; the Colts Black won the tight tussle.
